HP Laptop wifi woes

mattosensei

Hi, wondering if any one can help. Trying to setup Zorin on a family member's newish HP laptop.

I initially set Zorin up on an old (5+ yrs) HP laptop of my own and it works fine and the wifi works as it should. Transferring the SSD to this newer laptop, though, the wifi won't work.

I've been through quite a few threads and tried to install various drivers, but with no luck.

This is the laptop model:
https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/se ... l/17053409

Am beginning to think the only solution will be a wifi dongle. Not the end of the world if this is the only solution, though I will be travelling from next week and not where the laptop is for quite some time and had wanted to sort it. So if there was any way to resolve it via software that would be ideal.

Regarding the info you may need to help:

1. Name (Brand) of Computer Tower/System, Notebook Brand and model [Notebook = misnomer of 'Laptop' ;)
As per link above

2. Amount of available Memory (RAM)
4GB

3. Whether Zorin is the only OS on the computer or dual-boot (e.g. Windows [and which version of Windows!] and Zorin).
Yes

4. Hard Drive partitioning.
See output below

5. Graphics card make and model, or Graphics chipset in respect of Notebooks.
See output below

6. Audio chips/Soundcard
See output below

7. Wireless Dongle or PCI Card, or Wireless chipset.
See output below

8. Whether you ran Zorin Live first to check it worked before installing.
No, not on this machine. I'm downloading a live version of Mint now and will try that on a USB to see if that would get the wifi to work

9. Which version of Zorin you have installed/have in mind to install.
Core / zorin 12 xenial

I am getting this laptop to work via wired/ethernet connection.

Be useful to know whether it's a lost hope trying to get the wifi to work. Many thanks! :)

Hi thanks for advice here.

Have followed commands but no joy.

Also tried Mint LiveUSB and no wifi there either. I'm thinking it may just not be possible?

Hi,

you don't hav somewhere a wireless on/off slider on your laptap (I do have it next to my SD card insert on my VAIO !)

don't give up on missing driver. try out this in Terminal (paste/copy on line at the time)
Code:
sudo apt-get purge ndiswrapper*

Code:
sudo modprobe rtl8723de

alternative
Code:
sudo apt-get install git build-essential dkms
git clone -b extended https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
sudo dkms add ./rtlwifi_new
sudo dkms install rtlwifi-new/0.6

reboot

Hi, I should have been more clearer in that I meant you should try the command separately from the first one as looking at your terminal upload it looked like a dual entry. My bad. Can you connect via ethernet and do a system update to see if it fixes the issue? Alternatively, have you tried 'Additional Drivers' option that uses Windows drivers?

No prob. Am connected on ethernet cable to the internet ok.

I did an update this morning and just tried again but says no updates (sudo apt-get update).

Can you remind me where I install windows drivers? If you mean the wifi windows driver (option under system settings) I started with that yesterday but couldn't get very far. The option (windows wifi driver) appears to have disappeared now, perhaps I accidentally uninstalled in some of the commands I've been running?

Your Wifi-Card in your notebook is called : Realtek RTL8723BE/RTL8188EE NOT RTL8723DE but i dont know what driver works for you

RTL8723BE

Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
cd rtlwifi_new
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe rtl8723be

If you still have no Wifi try the next driver

RTL8188EE

Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic git
sudo apt-get install dkms
git clone http://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
cd /path/to/rtlwifi_new
make
sudo modprobe -rv rtl8188ee
sudo make install
sudo modprobe -v rtl8188ee

Good Luck^^

I have the same wireless card, what I have found that worked was to restart the laptop and somehow wifi started working. if not you can go to realtek.com and download the windows driver and install through the windows wifi driver installer (need both the WLAN and bluetooth that is in the download menu. file format is .inf
