[Resolved] Intermittent WIFI Loss

betazep

Sun Aug 26, 2018 6:20:57 pm

Hi all,

I installed ZORIN about a week ago. I am experiencing a periodic (about once a day... sometimes a couple times a day) network loss where my WIFI just stops working, and I don't know enough to get it started again without rebooting. I have tried restarting network services and a variety of other things to no avail. I travel a lot and would like to connect to my computer (using TeamViewer), but that isn't possible if the network is down. So I have ended up doing a daily cron restart at 5 am. (not ideal, I know) I am heading out for a week-long tech conference today... so we will see if this stopgap measure works.

If anybody would like to help me solve this mystery.... I would appreciate it... and I am sure I would learn a bunch in the process.

WHAT IT ISN'T
1. The WIFI network itself. I have many devices connected that all retain network. The WIFI on the system doesn't present networks to connect to.
2. Software Update provided updates. I have updated to latest.
3. A big problem. This OS is otherwise great! I have set up TeamViewer, Citrix Client, nfs mounts, and everything else I need to do my IT job... as well as things for fun.

Hi

sorry to see that your wi-fi card is playing tricks.
according Dell your Wireless NIC is a Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260
first step is to install an update driver
Code:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005511/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html

kindly advise outcome

Whilst not related to networking, I would also advise updating your BIOS but not sure how this will work in the absence of that other OS having recently having had to look at old Dells to upgrade from XP to Windows 7 that were used as standalone machines for students at work. ;) :D

Re BIOS... before running away from windows while screaming a bunch of profanity, I updated the BIOS to the latest Dell had to offer. There may be a later one available that I can get in there (as this computer is a few years old). I will look into it when I return from my trip. Thanks for the tip!

Well apparently others are having this intermittent problem... from dmesg...

Code:
iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Queue 10 is active on fifo 2 and stuck for 10000 ms. SW [137, 188] HW [90, 90] FH TRB=0x05a5a5a5a

[60696.590354] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Scan failed! ret -5
[60697.608716] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Failed to wake NIC for hcmd
[60697.608817] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Error sending SCAN_OFFLOAD_REQUEST_CMD: enqueue_hcmd failed: -5
[60697.608822] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Scan failed! ret -5
[60698.627260] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Failed to wake NIC for hcmd

...etc...

After it gets in this state, no service restarts fix it. But I did find this to at least offload and rescan the nic. This seems to allow me to get back healthy without a reboot.

Code:
find /sys -name wlp2s0 -path *devices/pci*
# Result : /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.2/0000:02:00.0/net/wlp2s0
echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.2/0000:02:00.0/remove
echo -n 1 > /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.2/rescan
service network-manager restart

Still googling around. Maybe if I find something more permanent, I will update it here for others.

Did you get the latest available driver from here?:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke ... .git/tree/

Which is what the intel wifi page directed to for 'latest' drivers? ;)

Yep. As far as I know, I have the the latest version possible.

I might have fixed it by turning off power management, though. Needs a couple of days.

BTW... I am absolutely loving this OS. Everything is super speed. Even my bluetooth speaker syncs properly with youtube video mouth movements. (which was a problem in Windows)

Code:
:~$ ls /lib/firmware | grep iwlwifi-7260-17
iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode
:~$ modinfo iwlwifi | grep 7260
firmware:       iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode

I turned off my morning reboot yesterday. Still have network today. I think turning off power management did the trick. :)

Code:
:~$ iwconfig

It's the same for Windows - I had to remind the Technicians where I work that a student's notebook was not connecting - by default, Windows has power save on the wireless turned on by default - you have to go in and turn that option off. ;) :D
