Is this a memory issue or a bug?

Hi guys. I have this issue, from time to time my system gets frozeen for a while, this happens when I save a web page , or tried to open a file in order to attach it to an email. Also when trying to save a document or when try to download it to my computer a picture from "whats app desktop app".

My Hard disk has some errors , as comented in here https://zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13995&hilit=+HDD+errors, but I thought these cluster aren't used since I run all the SMART Test as possible.

I have 4 GB Ram. I don't know how to check , but only running a memtest, which I don't know how to read. :|
This is my system
Code:
System:    Host: estudiosil Kernel: 4.15.0-39-generic x86_64 (64 bit)

Is this the spec of the processor?

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_D ... 00%29.html

My only other thought is how big is your swap area? It should be double the amount of your RAM. ;) :D

Thank you for your reply. I don't know about the procesor, but you are awright it is a" D " model. Do you need me to confirm that? (in order to do so I must check on the manual and come back later)

You are also awright regarding the swap it is only 4.3GB, it must be 8 GB .... silly of me!!, that is why my computer doesn't hibernate either!. The thing is my disk is quite small for nowdays 320 GB and sometimes swap isn't used, so I maiht have thouht that I could save the difference for storage purpouses when I intalled de OS. To extend the swap partition I must shorten the """home""" partition (between a lot of commands, because it is a figurative way of speaking).

Can I try sorting this issue with another "trick"? :?:

Your PC specs are almost identical to one of mine, dual core 2.5Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD and 4 GB swap. Cant recall if I've had Zorin Lite on it but many other Distro's and they all run just fine. So not likely to be your specs, maybe your HDD is on the way out?

Regarding sorting this out with another "trick" have you tried saving to a USB stick/drive or some other drive as seems to me when you are reading from or writing too your drive that the machine is freezing so another drive might help trouble shoot. Also is it slow to boot up and how much free space on your system partition 2 do you have just to be sure its not full up.

Hello!!. Thank you for your reply.

I haven't tried saving in an USB Drive, until today but I didn't find the path to it , I went to / dev , searching for SDB but didn't find it, (this was going to be another trend for tomorrow)

Regarding the space in partition 2 I have 129 GB left

Regarding SMART TEST this is the result I have now after running the "short test" but I used to have more bad sectors which I presume were marked before formatting by SMART TEST from USB live (you can see this in the link I pasted above)

Translations from the pics below.

Threshold not exceeded
Disk Ok

Rate of reading errors - Value 69

PS I have to check a way to rezise the swap , I would do this after I finished my studies this years, since now I have to work with my computer.

Hi pcfan5,

You won't be able to resize any partitions unless you activated LVM (Large Volume Management) at point of install. ;) :D

Which browser are you using? I ditched Chromium from Day 1 - it has to be Opera or Firefox in Zorin Lite for me. ;) :D

Hi

under Terminal one of my favorite commands is ~$ top
giving you live system usage

when opening my browers on then chromium>waterfox>opera

chromium eats alot of RAM

It would appear the faster browsers use the most memory:

I use chromium and firefox. Whenever I tried to get a file for example for attachement or whenever I need to save somethin (includeing files in librreoficce apps - no necesary internet browsing) I got this freezing isues...
Is it my computer to old to use Zorin?
Is this a problem with the disk or the memory?

By the way Swap isn't used, when running chromium I check this through "task monitor" always at 0%

Well it has served well for 6 years. I would be curious to know if a new drive would help and reseating of ram (and possible cleaning with a plastic rubber of the contacts - I'm sure I read that somewhere - to remove oxidation on the memory. Someone on here will correct me if I'm wrong. ;) :D

you are ok with the rubber I have done a couple of month before... don't know how to reset the memory , right now I am not able to buy a new HDD all in all, are the requirements gien in the official zorin site for zorin lite minimuns??

Hi pcfan5, all the information is here:

https://zorinos.com/help/system-requirements/

Reseating just means removing and if more than one stick, swap them round.

Thank you for the link I saw this before, I am just wondering if the requirements there are the ones called "minimuns".

Thanks for the tip I will do so...

I cleaned the contacts with a rubber and swap the modules in both sockets, still the same... when browsers such as chromium or firefox are opened, most of times systems gets stucked. (I have shortened swap from 8 gb to 4 gb again, seens a bigger size doesn't help in anything only 3% used an not always )
