[CLOSED] Radeon issues in Zorin

Hello,
I am brand new to Linux and Zorin is the first distro i have tried. So far, i really like Zorin, but i am having problems with the system randomly hard locking. Since installing Zorin, my computer has never booted on the first try. Normally, it takes around 5 times to get to the Zorin desktop. Lately, it is taking around 15 or 20 tries to get it loaded. Once loaded, everything works great for about 3 or 4 days until the curser stops moving and the keyboard stops responding at some rondom time. I disabled the Zorin splash screen because i really enjoy watching Linux boot and i noticed that, when the text stops at fb: switching amdgpudrmfb from VESA VGA, the system almost always goes to a black screen with a frozen cursor, no keyboard response, no caps lock response. When the text goes past that point, into the green [OK] 's, It is likely that I can get to the login screen but the system may freeze as soon as i enter my password.
Now, i did alot of searching and discovered nomodeset. As soon as i entered that in the boot menu, the system booted flawlessly for the first time and is very stable. The only problem is that it is like running Windows in VGA mode. Any ideas on how i might be able to get my system running with the Redeon drivers loaded without freezing up? I have done the Dell memory tests and it said the RAM was fine, CPU is running nice and cool... I tried downloading the Ubuntu Radeon drivers, but they return an error of "unsupported OS" Under Softare & Updates, Additional Drivers, I show "no additional drivers available"
Any help would be much appreciated,
THanks,
Derek

Hi

Zorin 12.4 is Ubuntu 16.04 derived.
Download driver from AMD site 'AMDGPU-Pro Driver Version 17.40 for Ubuntu 16.04.3' and place file on your desktop.
Code:

Well... THe driver that you gave me a link to seems to be for a Radeon RX Vega. After doing alot more digging, i found that what i really have is a Ryzen 5 2400g w/ intigrated graphics: https://www.amd.com/en/support/apu/amd- ... -ryzen-5-0 I contacted AMD to make sure that we are installing the right driver... Ill let you know what they say.
Thanks,
Derek

Response and Service Request History:

Thank you for the email.

I understand that you wish to get the compatible driver for your Dell Inspiron 15 5575 laptop equipped with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U APU with Vega 8 integrated graphics running on Ubuntu 16.04 distribution.

AMD Ryzen Mobile Processors with Radeon Vega Graphics have been widely adopted by global notebook PC manufacturers, with each adopting individual customizations for each notebook design or series. Due to the customization, which includes specific software feature support, the generic software driver package from AMD is not supported on those notebook PCs.

As of now, the driver support for your APU is thru laptop manufacturer only, I request you to get in touch with the laptop manufacturer and check regarding the Ubuntu 16.04 driver support. https://www.dell.com/en-in/shop/laptops ... 540119win8

Thanks for contacting AMD.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Best regards,

Ali

==================================================
Well, Dell doesn't offer any drivers other than Windows 10... So after doing some digging, I found some folks are using Ubuntu 18 with the AMD Raven Ridge APU, with few issues after a Kernel update and bios update. Soo... Im going to try and load the driver you suggested after backing everything up, and i guess if it blows up, Ill try Ubuntu 18 and see if i can get that to work. I really like Zorin, so i really hope that i can get it to work! Not crazy about the possibility of having to go back to Windows 10 :-P Anyway, Ill let you know what happens...
Thanks,
Derek

Hi.
I've a Radeon HD6470M graphics card on ZorinOS 12.4 and since one week ago I'm using https://launchpad.net/~paulo-miguel-dia ... buntu/mesa with no single problem (so far). My lspci says I've got VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Seymour [Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series] [1002:6760] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]). As of "xdpyinfo | grep DRI" says :
DRI2
DRI3
after I made a new file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ named 11-amdgpu.conf as I saw in one post in ubuntugeek. Rendering is a lot better than the original kernel driver but (and this is a BIG BUT), in my friends laptop (which is similar to mine ASUS K73BY) using LinuxMint based on Ubunto 18.04 the results were just like the old propietary driver. The rendering is quite outstanding smoth and fast. Using compiz in his laptop and mine there is a huge diference. So as someone else sayd before, we should wait for next ZorinOS based on 18.04.1 Should be a better GPU experience. These guys really made a good job (Paulo Dias and Oixbaf)

Good luck and cheers

Problem solved... I had to go with Ubuntu 18.10 to get everything to work right. I am very happy and the OS is rock solid- laptop has been up for weeks without a hiccup. So, anyone else who reads this and has a AMD Raven Ridge APU... you need 18.10 for it to work correctly...

Raven Ridge should work with this workaround used by someone in Ubuntu 18.04 on which Zorin 15 is based:
