Problem summary / context:
I use ZorinOS daily - and love it!
However, I'll get intermittent freezes (maybe once or twice a week) which are a little frustrating. I get them both on my work box (the one below,) and one at home which has a similar setup.
I use the super/windows key exclusively to search for/open apps, as well as Super+L to bring up the lock screen. It seems like one of those two actions has usually been used recently when the OS freezes.
I keep the system up to date, never waiting more than 4-5 days after a kernel update, security update, etc comes out before installing
Aside from the normal "help", I do have two questions:
1) Are there any log files which might be helpful in tracking down problem children after a freeze happens and I restart?
2) I recently figured out that Ctrl+Alt+1 will bring the OS into a GUI-less mode. If that still works when the system is frozen, any suggestions for commands I could run to help chase down the problem?
System information:
The one below powers two monitors (4k + 3440x1440), and another desktop I use at home only has one (4k) monitor - both experience the freeze issue - so I don't think it's related to my dual monitor setup.
OS Version: ZorinOS 12.4 Ultimate
Kernel: Linux version 4.15.0-42-generic
Custom built box by System76. Their default Pop! OS is okay..but I like Zorin better
Specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte X299 AORUS Gaming 3-CF
Processor: Intel i7-7800X @ 3.50GHz
Video Card: GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
RAM: 32GB of Ballistix Sport @ 2666Mhz
Hard Drive partitioning:
I have not overclocked the CPU or changed the RAM voltage at all - everything is stock.
ZorinOS 12.4 is the only OS installed.
I use Gnome Tweak Tool with the following settings:
