Can't access my laptop after Zorin OS update

I don't know much about Linux/Zorin though my laptop has had it for several years. I haven't needed to use my laptop in about 6 months. I powered it up and left it to recharge. It now has an updated version of Zorin OS and the sign-in screen to access my laptop has changed. I thought I knew the password but it is not working. Does anyone have an idea of how to access my laptop or do I need to reset and reinstall and lose everything that was saved on it? I appreciate any ideas!
