[CLOSED] Sound Problem running Zorin as a Virtual Machine

I am experimenting with Zorin in an "Oracle VM Virtual Box" under a Linux Mint host.

BBC Radio4 audio files, in either .MP4 or .MP3 format that I download and which run in Mint appear to be running in any of the Zorin supplied audio applications but don't produce any sound. I have checked that the volume control is turned up but, so far, no sound.

I would welcome suggestions as to what I have missed.....

Hope this helps you get a resolution to your issue:

As Rhythmbox is the 'de facto' audio player, the one that comes with Zorin is 3.4.2 but I noticed that the latest is 3.4.3 which has fixed some bugs so another potential option would be to remove Rhythmbox in Zorin VM and install the updated version to the VM:

Thanks for the suggestions.

From the second link I discovered
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

I have been experimenting with VM's and have:-

Linux Mint 19 - Mate
Linux Mint 19 - XFCE (I was comparing these desktops with Cinnamon that was running on the host)
Win7

Using the command above I could hear the .wav file on these 3 VMs.

I now have a copy of Zorin Ultimate, a VM of this also produced sound.
Which was not the case with the Zorin Core VM

So it does seem, on my set up at least, Zorin Core was not producing audio.

Try:
sudo alsamixer
In the control panel that pops up, keep using right arrow to scroll sideways to Automute and Disable it.

Thanks for the your suggestion.

I tried "sudo alsamixer" in the Zorin VM and received the message "cannot open mixer No such file or directory"
It is in this VM that, so far, I have no sound.

I put "sudo alsamixer" into the Zorin Ultimate VM and did get the AlsaMixer v 1.1.3.
As I have sound in this VM I didn't disable it.

This has now become an "out of interest" problem, as any other experiments I wish to make can be done in the Zorin Ultimate VM.

Do you have the latest Oracle Virtual Box installed and have you got the Extension Pack installed? I've noticed a newer Core release, r1. ;) :D

Again, thanks for suggestions.

I did have Extension Pack installed but it turned out that I was using Oracle Virtual Box 5.2.2

An upgrade to 6.0.1 got me sound in the Zorin Core VM.

Odd that ver 5.2.2 gave me sound in 4 different VM's but not the Zorin Core VM

A lesson here about making sure I have everything updated.......

Thanks all for your responses and patience.

Hi, I've closed this thread and changed the heading slightly so that forum visitors can see this is a VM and not a hardware install. ;) :D
