HP Printer Setup

CARTUJO

Wed Jan 29, 2020 12:43:26 pm

Hello there. I have a printer problem.

Attention to this:
I have a recent installation of Zorin OS 15 Lite (64bit version) and I have not made any settings.

I have plugged in a HP LaserJet 1505 printer, and Zorin detect it.
Everything to be normal, but the printer doesn't print.

What are the stpes to follow?

Thanks in advance!

I'm at work now - can get back to you this p.m. - Unless Aravisian beats me to it! ;) :D

OK, Open printers and delete the printer.

Next open a terminal and enter:

Code:
sudo system-config-printer
- you will be asked for your login password to elevate you to root.

You will get similar interface as starting Printers normally, but this sometimes works better than launching from the gui - especially when it comes to network printers.

Next Choose the connection that matches where your printer lives on the system.

Then select 'Choose Make' - select 'HP'

Then Choose Model - LaserJet P1505 is listed as is P1505n - only you know which one you've got! Then choose the one that has (recommended) at the side of it.

I have also read where the older HPLIP toolbox works better than the current one in some instances - blame that on HP? (or the Linux Kernel!)

Hi, thanks for your quick response. But... unfortunately doesn't work. I was reading your manual, and I have installed Synaptic Manager without lucky.
I have searched for printers there and HPLIP was installed. A 'HP' icon has appears -lower-right on the panel- but, still without lucky.
I don't know what else to do.

Can you clarify the bit about Synaptic? Did it not install? It could be the issue I mentioned in my last post about old hplip being required which won't be in Synaptic. I will try and find the post/web page about this. ;) :D

See if this article helps - in this article it states you should have the printer turned off whilst installing the software/drivers:

Yes, the Synaptic package has been installed correctly. I've installed the HPLIP package 3.17.10. but, nothing happens.
Zorin can see the printer, and send jobs, but the printer doesn't print anything

Can you try using HPlip 3.18
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ ... n/download

You will need to remove all traces of the previous driver (always use rm -rf with caution!)
Code:
sudo rm -rf /usr/share/hplip

Code:
sudo rm -rf /etc/hp

Code:
sudo rm -rf ~/.hplip

Code:
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/hp

Install 3.18.6 and after doing so, be sure to chmod to make it executable
Code:
chmod +x hplip-3.18.6.run

then run it from terminal and follow the prompts given
Code:
./hplip-3.18.6.run

and check that you install the plugin
Code:
hp-plugin

No-no no... I have not any hair on my head. Why I can not print???
I did step by step what you say. ZorinOS sends the job to the printer. But any page is printed.
The printer works fine on Windows, So, it's not a hardware problem.

There exist a bug or known problem with HP printers?

Could you please try the troubleshooting guide here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems
I agree it is unlikely to be hardware. HP can, at times, be tricky to get it to work right on Linux. It is intended for WIndows and the HP support gives only lip service to Linux. This is true for many distros.
And Frustrating!

Have you followed this guide from HP?: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ros/ubuntu

May I suggest taking a look here
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_p1505

or here

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing

and here

Linux Mint is ubuntu based as well so the commands should be straightforward.

In case you tried all that ignore me ;)

Canon... is Linux compatible?

Swarfendor437

Tue Feb 11, 2020 1:01:55 pm

Yes it is - they actually provide Linux drivers.

See my tutorial video here:

https://vimeo.com/194247629

I thought I made a tutorial doc on my box account - will try and get this done.

There's a way how to install scangear but it is now downgraded to what it used to be I've found out - in the past, scangearmp looked like the Windows interface - now it is very basic (scangearmp2) but functional. ;) :D

see scangear how to here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9554&hilit=+scangearmp2

I'm not trying to hijack the topic, hplip installed without issues my Mint installation but is having trouble installing dependencies in Zorin OS.
I selected automatic installation and got these messages.
Even after scouting for answers I'm non the wiser on how to install these.
Still have a lot to learn about Linux

What happens if in terminal, you try
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hplip-isv/ppa

ENTER
This adds the repository so your system knows where to find the software
Code:
sudo apt update

Updates the repository source list with the new information
Code:
sudo apt-get install -y hplip

Install using "-y" to tell the dpkg installer to also install dependencies.

Now you are learning new things and becoming a Bit Wiser.;)

Why can't anything just get solved right away.
Hey Universe! I am trying to be a Hero, here! Cut me some slack.

ok...
Try
Code:
sudo apt-get install -y hplip

then follow it up with
Code:
sudo apt --fix-broken install

Thanks again but the missing dependencies remain. I've also visited many other forums but nothing works.
I uninstalled and started from scratch, still a no go :(

It seems hplip doesn't recognise Zorin although selecting Ubuntu during installation should work right?

warning: zorin distro is not found in AUTH_TYPES

note: Defaults for each question are maked with a '*'. Press <enter> to accept the default.
error: Auto installation is not supported for 'unknown' distro so all dependencies may not be installed.
Please install manually as mentioned in 'http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/index.html' web-site

I will try manual installation later today. If that doesn't work I'll have to pass.

What server are you using? You should check that you are on Main Server.
When I tested this in terminal using Zorin 15 Lite, it went through no problem. And hplip will recognize Zorin... because the O.S. I.D.'s itself.
Let's try using Synaptic:

Code:
sudo apt-get install Synaptic

Once Synaptic is installed, open it via alt+F2 or Terminal or Apps menu.
It will ask for your Root password to open.
Once, open, click the Search Icon in the top middle of the toolbar.
search for hplip
It should list it... If it does, you will want to check the following boxes
hplip
hplip-data
libhpmud0
libsane-hpaio
open-printing-ppds
printer-driver-hpcups
printer-driver-pxljr

Or you could temporarily rename Zorin's LSB:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14283&p=62993&hilit=How+to+rename+Zorin+to+Ubuntu#p62993

Change 16.04.4 to 18.04.2 and change "Xenial" to "Bionic Beaver"
