Different Menus for User Accounts

I'm missing something about how the startup process works. I added different
applications.menu
into $/xdg/menu, but still get the root menu for all the accounts. I think I need a separate desktop-session (/etc/profile.d) for each account.

Update:

Thanks Swarfendor.
I discovered that the preinstalled alacarte didn't do what I wanted, so installed menulibre. I found that they conflicted. After removing alacarte it worked great. Now I have to figure it out for XFCE since my boxes won't run Gnome3 with any speed.

Hi, I would suggest the 'easiest' ( :?: ) way would be to install different Desktop Environments to achieve this, e.g., Cairo-Dock - the user that wants to use Cairo-Dock then just goes to the cog at the login screen, click on that and select Cairo-dock. You could chance your arm with Cinnamon DE - other user wanting that clicks on Cog and selects Cinnamon. ;) :D
