VLC and Youtube

My copy of VLC 2.2.2 weatherwax, running on my Zorin12.04 laptop, can no longer stream Youtube content. It seems as though this is a relatively new issue (still months to years).

Looking online, it appears as though the VideoLAN > VLC > lus > playlist > youtube.luac file needs to be updated. The youtube guide was written for Windows users. Where would this file be in my Zorin nautilus file manager?

Does VLC essentially run on Linux coding such that this replacement file is the one that I should use?

If not, what should I do to get VLC to work with youtube?

Hi Finston, See if this helps:

Alternatively, give SMPlayer a try.

Thanks for that reply, Swarf.

Until I know that VLC 3.0.2 works with Youtube, I will keep researching replacing playlist/youtube.luac in VLC 2.2.2

I have found the sucker at:

usr/lib/vlc/lua/playlist/youtube.luac

It is dated 11 Aug 20017 - so something happened after this date.

The update to VLC 3.0.2 is dated May 2018 - of course, the PPA could have been updated recently for the latest youtube.luac - maybe not. The VLC fix that I found online was dated Jan 2020, so really quite recently.

Does anyone have VLC 3.0.2 running on Zorin12.04 and working OK with Youtube, I wonder?

In the meantime I will study the two versions of youtube.luac to see if they are broadly similar language etc.

Hi Finston, I was wondering if the You Tube videos you have been trying to watch are av01 which VLC does not support. See this thread:

I followed the method used to cure the mrl problem at:

https://www.latecnosfera.com/2016/10/vl ... n-mrl.html

Instead of that source for the updated youtube.luac file, I used:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/video ... outube.lua

I changed the file extension from youtube.lua to youtube.luac in Notepad and saved it in documents (all files setting).

I then used SpceFM, in root window mode, to copy the .luac file in documents, delete the youtube.luac file at:

usr/lib/vlc/lua/playlist/youtube.luac

and then relace it with the github version.

Blow me! Success - everything working once again!!

I've just got to find some good quality recordings now!!
