Screen freezes on pattern

I’m refurbishing some old PCs, and wanted to try out Zorin OS lite on this one (I’ve never used Zorin before, and I’m new to Linux in general.) Stats are as follows:

“emachines” brand tower, approx 15 years old (and low end for its time)
AMD Athlon 3800+
About 1gb memory (916480k)
ATI Radeon xpress 200 onboard graphics
160gb hdd with Ubuntu installed

PC ran Windows XP fine with its old drive (upgraded to a drive with Ubuntu installed, which it is unable to run.) I have a usb thumbdrive flashed with the latest version of Zorin OS lite. The PC is able to boot from the drive, and running “check installation medium for defects” shows that it’s working correctly. When booting Zorin, everything loads correctly and the GUI comes up with full functionality. I’m able to open menus, start programs, etc. However, invariably within about 10-15 seconds of the GUI fully loading, the screen freezes to solid white or a pattern of vertical stripes (what the pattern is seems to vary based on what the computer is doing at the time.) This happens whether I try to immediately run programs or simply let it load uninterrupted. It happens in safe graphics mode as well (with nomodeset specified.) The only way to get it out of this screen is to hard reset the computer.

Any help anyone is able to lend is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I think your biggest problem is going to be the onboard graphics. I would seriously give AntiX-19 or MX-Linux 19 a try - perhaps the former 32-bit version as it uses very low resources. Or you could give Arcolinux a try or Arch and put LXQt on it:
