Gnome Boxes Not Working

Hi,

I checked Search and Tutorials and did not see this issue raised early--apologies if I missed it and this is a re-post.

So, I'm running Zorin 15.2, all packages updated via apt-get update

When I tried the version of Gnome Boxes which came default with Zorin [sorry, don't know the version number, since I've installed a newer one over it], each VM would simply fail to start.

So, I upgraded Boxes via flathub, v.3.36.6 and the graphics were nicer, but I still get an error msg "Virtualization extensions are not installed on the machine. Check your BIOS.'

Well, Boxes had always worked in other version of Linux, but just so could say I did, I went into the BIOS to check and sure enough, VEs are installed.

So, my question is: where do I go from here? How to get Boxes to work properly?

The troubleshooting log is pasted below.

Many thanks,

Scubapro25

Hi, I have Zorin 15.2 installed on my rig and no Gnome Boxes, only Virtual Box from Oracle comes with Zorin - and I tend to use the latest from Oracle directly. I noticed in your read out of a mention of persistence which would suggest your system is running on a memory stick - or have I misunderstood your setup? ;) :D

Hmmm... that's odd, because I'm not running it on the stick but actually a regular old-fashioned spinning platter hard drive.

I believe the persistence in this instance refers to the vpn connectivity.

There is a standing bug report on this issue that affects multiple users:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1762205

Code:
sudo apt-get install qemu qemu-kvm libvirt-bin

According to John Tanner on that page, it may be a groups issue:
1.) Add group=kvm in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf
2.) Add yourself to the kvm group - sudo usermod -a -G kvm userName

He says the above is a possible solution.

But please read the whole thread over at that report.

Thanks, Aravisian--I'll check it out.
