Plug an ethernet cable on your laptop to get internet, restart and from the grub menu chose the "recovery mode".
In the next menu chose "dpkg" and let it do all the necessary updates and fix broken packages (if any).

After the process is finished, reboot and let us know if that helped.

Note1: Do not interrupt the updating process by any means. Leave it for as long as it takes.
Note2: After completing updating and rebooting, for the first time it may delay a little longer to get into desktop as it redifines the system and the changes take effect. So, let it get into desktop without interrupting it.
