Webcam Problem

rocket5375

Thu Apr 12, 2012 2:11:44 pm

Hi-I have been trying to get my Logitech c510 webcam to work in Skype and Cheese. I've followed the first part of the instructions in Yehudah's post to get Cheese working, but with no success. I don't no how to edit the appropriate file for Skype -I need more information on how to do this. The webcam does work in guvcviewer (shows up as 046d:081d) and in Windows 7. I've checked the video settings in Skype (which does recognise the camera), but all I get is a black screen (same in Cheese). This webcam can work properly in Linux; everything seemed to be fine with my last distro (Netrunner) until a system upgrade-I had video for 3 whole weeks! Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

are you using the medibuntu repo??. see here for details:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1852

Once you have done that, run the following commands in a terminal:

sudo apt-get update

then:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Open synaptic and type "v4l" in search and look down the list and make sure that that package and any others you think you might need are intstalled, it may be simply a codecs problem!!.

Was the camera pluged in when you ran the command?

Could you please plug in the camera, open terminal and write this time just

Code:
lsusb

because I cannot find your logiteck camera.

Wolfman-I have executed all four of the commands you recommended, and have installed the v4l control panel. Still only a black screen in skype and cheese (but a green one when I click on 'Preview' in v4l !). Guvcview is still the only programme that seems to be talking to the webcam properly.

Your webcamera seems to be supported by the latest kernel of Zorin. Her ID (046d:081d) actually shows that the camera is the c310 (and not the c510) but anyway the uvc driver preloaded in the kernel is supported (http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/#devices).

Try changing the resolution above the 640x480. Try i.e. 752x416.

rocket5375

Hi-I tried reducing the resolution down to 752x416 in Cheese (it was set at 1600x1200) and got a picture for the first time, but when I tried again later, I could not get it back at any setting-very frustrating! I have no idea how to change the resolution for Skype.

At least we made some small progress...

Maybe there is a problem with your graphics card driver...?
Can you please post the result of
Code:
lspci

What resolution are you using presently in your PC/laptop?
Have you checked in "additional drivers" to see if there is any recomended driver available to be enabled for your graphics card...?

Have you tried disabling the recomended driver? I have a laptop with an ATI card and it works better without enabling the driver from additional drivers.

swarfendor437 -thanks for the tip. I'll give Opera a try. madvinegar -I have disabled the proprietary driver-it makes no difference, apart form one thing; when I tried to open Cheese after testing Skype, the computer froze on a page of text. I had to reboot the system.

Hi,

another thing you can try is restarting your PC and then go to recovery mode and run "dpkg", you may not have all the packages and thats why it won't work!!.

Did you download Skype via their own website or did you install it through the Ubuntu repository??. The 32 bit is available via Synaptic!!, the 64 bit version can be downloaded from here:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-sky ... ter/linux/

Select the Ubuntu 64 bit package. (don't worry about it saying thats it is for 10.04!!)

Hi Wolfman. I have been using the version of Skype that came pre-installed with my copy of Zorin ( Ultimate 64 bit). Should I be using the 32 or 64 bit version of Skype? Ran 'dpkg' . The only problem was that when the os loaded afterwards, there was no toolbar! Had to force a restart. Removed Skype and installed the latest 64 bit version from the link you provided. Still no video.Have been on the Logitech Linux Forum and tried out a couple of suggestions, but to no avail. I didn't attempt the solution from 'esso' at <http://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/video-is-not-working-on-Ubuntu-11-10/td-p/216792/page/2> for fear of making matters worse-I don't feel all that comfortable messing around with text files. Where do we go from here?

Thanks again for your help

Hi,

did you update the system as I stated before??.

Open a terminal and paste these 2 commands one after the other:

sudo apt-get update

then:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and see if this helps.

Swarf has also asked about the status of your graphics card drivers, do you have an ATI or Nvidia card and did you install the drivers via the Control Center > Hardware > Additional Drivers!!. (Doesn't work for Intel!!).

Thanks Swarf,

I just saw that bit!!.

Remove the ATI drivers using the same tool you used to install them in the Control Center and go directly to the AMD website:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Select all the correct details and download the package, once downloaded, right click the package and then go to permissions and make it "Executeable", then double click and install, then restart!!.

Hi Wolfman-I've followed all of your instructions to the letter so far, but I executed those two commands again, just to be sure. The card is an integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200. At the moment, I'm just running it on a generic driver, but when I install the one from 'Additional Drivers' it also installs the 'Catalyst Control Center', so I'm assuming that this is the proper ATI/AMD Linux driver for this card. I had been using this latter driver until recently. By the way, Skype would not work when running from the live DVD, either ( I verified the download and the burn). I hoped it might sort itself out once Zorin was properly installed.

Wolfman-I've just seen your post about downloading the driver direct from the AMD/ATI website. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi again. Downloaded the correct driver from the ATI/AMD website, and managed to install it without breaking the system ! The only thing I've noticed is that Skype no longer appears in the notification area. Tried both the 64 bit version of Skype and the one available through Synaptic ( I have been using the Ubuntu Software Center up until now). No change, I'm afraid.

Hi rocket,

I can only say that you can try opening Synaptic; find skype then right click on it and then remove it completely, restart your Pc and re-install it and start again, I am all out of suggestions at the moment!.

A just in case scenario is right clicking on the Skype package in Synaptic and see if there are any recommended/suggested packages to install!.

Just tried that-same result. Very disappointed-I make video calls quite often, so it looks like I can't get rid of Windows 7 just yet! What I can say is that Zorin is probably the most accomplished distro I have come across so far, and is tantalisingly close to being the ideal OS for me . Thanks to all those who have contributed to trying to fix this issue; this is certainly the friendliest and most helpful forum I have ever used.

Hi rocket,

this is really strange as I have a Logitech webcam too and mine works no problem, only one model down from yours, I will look further into the matter, mine works fine on all versions of ubuntu!!.

Have you tried moving the webcam to another USB slot??, I would try that and if it is going through a hub, plug it directly into a free USB port and then start your PC and see what happens!!.

Just a footnote, don't allow Skype control of the audio settings, otherwise it will mute the mic etc!!. You can disable that in the Skype sound options menu should you get it working!!.

Another part of my cunning plan is to install the following packages via a terminal. (should most likely be there but you never know!!)

sudo apt-get install libqt4-dbus libqt4-network libqtcore4 libqtgui4

Also, take a look at this link, it holds a few clues!!:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install ... buntu.html

If you don't have it installed, always use the prog "gdebi" to install single deb packages, it resolves the dependency issue better!!. It is in the repo!!. Once installed; right click on any deb package and "Open With" > Gdebi.

Your sound settings (using Pulse Audio) should look something like mine.

Do you have any other optical device plugged in any other usb slot? i.e. a dvbt tuner?

We could also try something else, just to see if we can get the real reason behind the problem.

Plug your webcamera and try to open it i.e. using cheese.
As soon as you get the problem with the black screen, open terminal and write:

Code:
dmesg

and then post the results here, but within <code> bruckets as it is going to be a lot...

Hi all-sorry I couldn't reply sooner-I'm back at work now. I checked that the packages mentioned were installed-they were. Switched the computer off and swapped around the webcam and external drive USB connections. Restarted the computer, but Zorin would not boot the first time. It froze on a blue screen-I thought the hard drive might have failed. It booted properly the second time, opened Skype and...I now have video. How could changing the USB socket make any difference? Guvcview and Cheese are also working fine. I've rebooted a couple of times now, and the camera has continued to work. I did have some sound issues- now resolved. Alsa wouldn't remember my settings after rebooting-it kept returning to the defaults (I use headphones), and was trying to use the wrong sound source. I fixed this by installing the Pulseaudio volume control, and disabling sound from the graphics card (which was listed as a sound source). Thanks to Wolfman, Madvinegar and Swarf for your fantastic support-I've learnt a lot over the past week.

Regards

P.S. Wolfman-Thanks for the installation tips

I would say that most (if not all) the jewels should go to WM. I had mostly an "investigating" part in the solution, while WM did the actual work!
