So I'm not sure what's wrong. This worked in Windows, but not in Zorin 5.2 Core..

It didn't work with Evolution either - but Midori did so I guess it's a Chrome issue.

Well I got Chrome to work with Evolution just by uninstalling and reinstalling. I suspect what happened was I used "Add Account" under my name at the gmail site, which is this feature that lets you open more than one gmail account at once - and that must have somehow caused the email handler to get permanently confused since it doesn't know which account to open the composition with the mailto: link. In any case I'm just going to use Evolution for my mail client now!
