[SOLVED] Wifi?

Hi there,

My 1st post at the forums, using Zorin 6 ultimate.

Get connected using Ethernet but cant connect via WiFi.........any help would be appreciated.

Even if you have not included the results of all the commands I requested, I think that it is very easy to fix your wifi.
Your wireless card is this one:
06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)


Follow the steps:

1) If there is a switch for your wifi, make sure that it is "on". (I could tell this if I see the result of the "sudo rfkill list all" command).
2) Go to "additional drivers" and make sure that the recomended STA Broadcom driver is de-activated. If it is activated, DE-activate it and reboot.
3) Open synaptics package manager, find and install the following packages:

b43-fwcutter
firmware-b43-installer

(you tick the boxes next to them, you select "mark for installation", and then you click on "apply" on the bar above them).

After that you should see the nice blue colour of your wifi shining...

The whole command ie lspci
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all

wont get pasted in terminal.......just just lspci.


STA is activated at the moment. I shall do as you have posted.

Just for the record, these comands are three separate ones.
You hit enter after each line and you post the results.
i.e.

lspci <enter>
sudo lshw -c network <enter>
sudo rfkill list all <enter>

(Sorry for not clarifying).

1. The machine/OS feels a bit bloated....... haven't updated yet......any advice/suggestions?

Have you also installed firmware-b43-installer???? (its says "firmware=N/A")

Go to synaptics package manager and make sure that these two packages are installed:

1) b43-fwcutter
2) firmware-b43-installer

Make sure that in additional drivers the recomended STA Broadcom STA driver is DE-activated.

And then open terminal and run:

sudo modprobe b43


Is your wifi light on? Do you see the available networks in the network manager?


P.s. You do not need the windows wireless drivers. The bcm4311 card works just fine as I am explaining above.

I was installing firmware-b43-installer when got dcd, gave an error but now synaptic shows as being installed?

Just to be sure, mark both of the packages for re-installation.

Do that, and then try again to connect.
Also, after re-installing the packages, give again the result of

P.S.: You can also do it throug terminal like follows:

Ok,

Please give again the results of the following commands just to see were you stand right now:

You say that the wifi light is on. When you go to the network manager, do you see the available networks?

1. Now the WIFI light is ON.

2. In system settings > Network I see both wired & wireless ( Airplane mode OFF).......What exactly do you imply by network manager?

3. If I re install Zorin Ultimate what exactly should I do to get WiFi?

Network manager is the symbol/icon on your panel bar which refers to your wifi or ethernet. It is next to your clock, battery icon, keyboard icon etc. It is usually pictured as two black pc-screens. If you left-click on it, it will list all available networks. Also, make sure that in the end of that list the "wireless network" is enabled/ticked.

If you left-click on network manager do you see the available networks?

In case you need to re-install zorin6, you follow the below procedure to get wireless enabled.

1) Plug an ethernet cable to get internet.
2) If activated, De-activate the STA broadcom driver from additional drivers and reboot.
3) Open synaptics package manager and mark for installation, and install, the two packages "b43-fwcutter" and "firmware-b43-installer".

That's it.
Only if needed, after the above you open terminal and write
Code:
sudo modprobe b43


If all has gone well, you reboot and test if you still have wireless after the reboot.
If not, you open terminal and write:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modules

In the file that will open you add in the end of the line the word
b43

You save, exit and reboot to test again.

Thanks.

I see all available networks........am connected via both Ethernet & WiFi but doesn't show 2 black computers........in edit connections shows Wired 1 hour ago, Wireless Now.

When you are not connected to any network (neither ethernet, nor wireless) the network manager looks like two pc screens with a red X.
When you connect to wireless it looks like a signal symbol.

So, is everything working now? Have you tried unpluging your ethernet cable to test if your wireless works like it should?
Please advise so as to mark this thread as solved.

2. Correct Green signal.

3. Yes it works with unplugging the Ethernet.

4. how does one mark as solved?

Wow! I actually didn't understand the discussion here (didn't read very carefully), but I am impressed with the level of care that was taken to solve this problem.
