Restart / Shut down issue

Im back again... i have a problem when either shutting down or restarting my pc either through the Menu or bottom right corner symbol. I go to shut down or restart and the desktop just hangs, all icons dissapear and all thats left is the wallpaper, the pc doesnt go any further to closing down or restarting. Its fine when i first boot up and it shuts down normally but give it 5 minutes or more of use and it refuses to shut down without pulling the plug. Any suggestions to what could be wrong?
Cheers.

Before doing anything else, try this.

Plug an ethernet cable on you laptop to get internet (not wifi).
Reboot and from the grub menu choose the recovery mode (usually the 2nd option).
From the new menu select "dpkg" and let it run. This will update your system and will repair broken packages if any.

Then boot back to your desktop and see if that hepled.
