(SOLVED) Speed of Wireless internet connection

rene

Sun Jul 08, 2012 4:32:56 pm

I use wireless usb adapter (rtl8187). In Window$ (second OS on same PC) it works fine, but in Zorin (and, as i understand, it is a common issue for Linux), it is very slow or sometimes, it shows low level of the signal and doesn't work at all.

I have installed new drivers for the adapter, but seems like it doesn't change anything.

Is there any way to get same (or better) speed as in Window$?

Question. Since your laptop has a wireless card -3945ABG- why do you use a wireless USB stick? Would you like to try to enable it? (It should be enabled by default in the kernel of Zorin6).
Please also give the result of

Code:
lspci

Code:
sudo rfkill list all

As regards the USB can you please advise from where and what drivers di you download? Did you use ndiswrapper at all?
What kind of encryption do you use on your router?

Also I see that you have not updated (you still have kernel 3.2.0-24).
Please do
Code:
sudo apt-get update

Code:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Thanx, Madvinegar!

It took me a wile to get all updates with that connection...
I use USB Wireless adapter because it's antenna stronger then inner one. Though on my desktop, i use only USB Wireless, and have same problem there.
I have both connections - open and secure (WPA/WPA2). Both are from same provider and translator. And it seems now that this problem appears _only when i try to use SECURE connection_. But of course i'd prefer to use secure all the time.
Also after update it seems like open connection work faster, then before.
Driver for rtl8187 i've downloaded from realtek web-site.

Ok, since you prefer the USB adapter, lets work on that.

I see that all the terminal results look ok.
After your post here:
rene wrote: Though on my desktop, i use only USB Wireless, and have same problem there.

we must start thinking out of the box... :D
Try the following:

1) Plug the usb adapter in another USB port. It may work better in USB2 or in USB3.

2) Go to your router and change the following settings:
Change the 802.11b to 802.11g (or the other way around - according to what is already set).

3) Also, try changing the broadcast channel of the router because you may get interference. i.e. if it is set on channel 6, try setting it in channel 9.

If No2 and/or No3 works, you may even see that your inner wireless card will work much better.

Ok. Please, can you just clarify for me, where i can do this thing:

Thank you!
ps: In the beginning, work with Linux, reminds me time, when i was working on Robotron 1715 :) :)

You must access your router's settings. This can be done either by connecting the router with your laptop through ethernet cable and using the CD of the router, or by connecting to your router through wifi and openning a browser and navigating to the web-page of the router.
The adress will look like an IP. It will be something like 192.168.1.1 (or something similar). Turn your router upside-down and hopefully it will be mentioned there.

I suppose you can find all this info in the manual of the router.

1st option didn't help.

In my case, router is on side of local provider, i don't have access to it, i use only wifi adapter.

i've checked it more careful and now i'm sure that the signal and speed are lower only with SECURE connection. And it seems that on desktop it is a bit better...

Go to network manager>edit connections>wireless
Choose your network, click edit and go to the last tab that says ipv6 settings. Set "method" to "ignore".

Save, reboot and try to connect again and see if that helped.

Seems that it helped.

Thank you, madvinegar!

ps: Though hard to say why it works now. The signal strength and speed became better. It could be also because some changes from the side of provider or because of the weather, or both, or something else... In place where i'm living now, there are "too many variables", as dr.Mordin used to say. ...For example right now this signal has totally disappeared... Still, it seems that after disabling ipv6 it's better... when it is there.

I wish that you could also have access to the router and try the other settings I told you about. (changing the 802.11b to g, and changing broadcasting channel). I am sure that these would help a lot.
I will tell you 2 examples.
If you have a lot of neighbors with internet and all of them use channel 6, if you use channel 6 as well, you will not get "good" internet. You will see a great difference if you change channel to 9 or 11 for example.
Also, the wireless phones work on channel 6. If you have a wireless phone close to the router it creates interference and scrambles your wifi signal.

A lot of variables as you said...

I see.. Thanks, that's good to know!

So.. if i'll have a few words with our village provider and will get out of him IP of the router, it will be enough to get access to it, right? :\

You need also the name/password to access the router's webpage.

I've changed provider. Now i-net speed is same as in Windows, or actually a bit better. I think it was the case, madvinegar - mess from the side of router. Thank you!
