[SOLVED] Can't use Update Manager because of password issue

I installed Zorin OS many months ago -- and stopped using it owing to an annoying problem with Update Manager: It keeps asking me to "authenticate" by typing in my password. Problem is, I don't have one. I never set up a password anytime during the installation process. How can I work around this?

TIA!

Hi,

you did setup a password when you first installed Linux otherwise you could never have finished installing it, you can reset the password using:

http://naveenubuntu.blogspot.de/2012/05 ... -1204.html

Replace user "naveen" with your user name.

Thanks, but when I choose "drop to root shell prompt" (as described in the first tutorial), it says "give root password for maintenance." In other words, I can't get as far as a prompt without supplying the password I'm trying to reset!

Try also the method via a live CD/USB

Another option is to re-install but don't format your /home partition, that way; anything you have on there will remain intact!!.

When the installer asks where you want to install, select the partitions manually (something else) and don't mark the home for formatting but only the root partition.

This way you can create a new system with user and password!!.

See the "Installation Type" section here:

Yes, by reinstalling.
