I have tried creating the Dir's as required but to no avail
Now the system says Permission denied

Where am i going wrong? any ideas. output below.
Tried using the GUi to change Permissions but this is not allowed.

where do i go from here?

Or is moving to Zorin 6 going to be an improvement?

Hi,

1. Moving to Zorin 6 Core Final might be an advantage for you, that is something you must decide.

2. Paste this command in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install gdebi

Once Gdebi is installed, right click the "deb" package you have and then on "open with", select Gdebi and if you want, set it as default, it is faster than Ubuntu Software center.

If there are any dependencies, Gdebi should install them no problem.

Hi,

download the deb files again and move them into their own folder.
(create a folder for them in home and give it a name like printer drivers)

Do not install the drivers yet!.

Now open a terminal and paste this command:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Now open Software sources and change the download location for your software, if you arer already on main, change it to one in your country. Once you have changes the download location sucessfully, open a terminal and paste these commands:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

These 2 commands are required before the install for up to Ubuntu 9.04. (Might still be needed for Ubuntu 12.04 but the page might be out of date!!):

sudo aa-complain cupsd

sudo mkdir /usr/share/cups/model

Now try and install the packages via Gdebi.

Hi,

right click any "deb" package then go to properties > Open With, mark Gdebi and set it as "Default", close the window and double click the deb package and it should now open with gdebi.

You did install it right??. It won't show up in the apps list!!!.

sudo apt-get install gdebi

Well i think i have well and truly screwed up this system her - it seems as though nothing will clear this brother printer - and because of that it will not allow me to install anything.
I have been playing around on another box to limit any further damage i may do on this one if i don't screw that up too.

Hi,

see if you can locate the package in Synaptic and mark it for complete removal, this may be a way round it.

Another method is to open home and press Ctrl + h which will show hidden files and look for the .brother folder then delete it!!.

ok Guys.
What do you think, if i upgrade to 6 do you think it might just read me of the problem or make things worse?

Just checkout - But it dos not look likely. Tried the Z6 Live CD and that too is showing sighs of the same problem.
From the live environment.

This problem looks bigger than i thought.

Hi,

I don't think it would, make it worse by updating the OS, what you should do is make sure the printer is plugged in and switched on during install, you can keep the same /home partition and just install the new root and that way; you should keep all your other files and settings. (select "Something else" during the install and don't mark home for format).

Otherwise, I am out of ideas!!!.
