hello, this is my 1 st post so i know it will take a while to get answered. i have been reading these forums for the last 4 nights. trying to find a solution to my problem. i installed zorin 6 core on my wifes acer 1640z laptop with no problem except wireless will not work, but will work on that on my days off. i got home the next day and followed the same procedure on my desktop. problem is, i cannot get it to boot to zorin without the usb plugged in, fact is, it will not even go to the grub menu. ive done the repairs from the 2nd line in the grub and did the updates. i do not know what im missing.

system consists of:
GPU-NVIDIA GEFORCE 9400 GT
MONITOR-SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 19.1"
OS-WINDOWS 7 HOME PREM. (x64)
MOTHERBOARD- ASUS M5A97
CPU-AMD PHENOM 2 X6 1605T BLACK EDITION (UNLOCKED 4 CORE)
HDD-WDC WD5001AALS-00L3B2
PSU-TX650 CORSAIR POWER SUPPLY
RAM-G SKILL SNIPER DDR 3 8 GB ( 2X4 )
CPU COOLER-HYPER 212 EVO BY COOLER MASTER

JUST BECAUSE I DON'T SAY IT, DON'T MEAN I'M NOT THINKING IT !!!!

Hi,

did you update using a network cable??.

Look at this guide about updating in the "Broken Packages" section:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2247

Make sure you have a cable inserted.

Sounds like when you installed you put the bootloader on the USB stick and that is why it won't boot without it. The bootloader should be installed to "MBR" which is located on the first hard drive.

To fix GRUB , boot the live CD and open a terminal and type:

sudo update-grub

This should fix it, you can also use "Boot Repair" for GRUB which is what I would use!!:

yes i had internet cable and also updated grub. so where exactly will i find the MBR and is there a way for me to move it to where it belongs? i'm not good with ubuntu or zorin, but i learn fast and take lots of notes. i have had ubuntu for atleast 2 years but only dabbled. so far, i like the feel of the zorin os and am planning on learning from it. eventually i plan to dump windows for all the obvious reasons. will split my time between zorin and mint once it is installed.does boot repair need to be on a disc or could i possibly make a usb for it? i sure would like to keep any and all linux systems and repairs on one usb drive, that way im mobile, and will never know when i can talk others into using linux. my 16 yr old son is better with comp stuff and think i may have him talked into letting me drop zorin onto his hdd. so f you have any ideas of repair progs. for linux i should keep handy please let me know. thanks for the help

Hi,

yes you can use Boot Repair from a USB stick, install it like you would any other operating system via a USB stick:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Insta ... omUSBStick

Read the section about MBR here, 5th pic down:

http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair/home/Home/

And read instructions for use:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot- ... oot-Repair

Boot repair is a proper OS, you can use it to do almost any job that you would with any Ubuntu based system, it is based on the LXDE form of Ubuntu. when booting, make sure you select the corredt type of PC you have, either 32 or 64 Bit!!.

About MBR:
