[SOLVED] Could not load Shockwave Flash on Zorin Lite

BradJ

Sun Aug 12, 2012 2:37:42 pm

I'm trying to revive a very old 1.2Ghz Celeron PC for the inlaws and I am a linux newb.

Installed Zorin 6 Lite, works great but slow due to only having 256MB Ram (Trying to find an upgrade to the systems max of 512MB).

Only problem is I can't see flash content in Chromium or Chrome. In Chrome a yellow notification bar shows up saying "Could not load Shockwave flash".

I'm a little confused because I thought Chrome had a built in flash player.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi,

post this command in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install default-jre

This will give you full Java support, then open Synaptic package manager and type "flash" in search and then right click the package and add the "Suggested" packages.

Did you fully update the system??:

I ran the command for Java support, and the flash packages were already installed (I selected re-install to make sure it wasn't corrupted).

I go to Youtube for example, using Chromium. It requests permission to run flash, I click accept always. In the video box, it says Flash needs your permission to run.

Is there some sort of Permissions I need to fix? I have Flash enabled in the plugin page of Chrome.

On Chrome, I sometimes get Shockwave has crashed. Maybe this PC is too just too slow for modern web browsing?

Hi,

you might want to try "Midori" web browser which is lightweight, another alternative is a lightweight OS:

http://www.bodhilinux.com/

You PC should run okay but it is borderline with Zorin Lite (Lubuntu).

Just thought I would mention:

Shockwave and Flash are two different products and there is no linux version of shockwave.

Adobe Shockwave

Hi,

try installing Gnash via a terminal:

sudo apt-get install browser-plugin-gnash

It is the Linux equivalent for Shockwave.

Please help it is doing my head in. I have installed Zorin lite on to an old laptop and it is fantastic, it has put new life into it. The problem I have is that it will not play the flash embedded into web sited. I ave tried everything that has been listed above but to no avail. It just does not want to work, does anyone have a suggestion on what to try next?

Hi Batdragon,

have you installed the "Medibuntu Repo" ??:

Yes to Medibuntu Repo after you pointed me in the right direction. Still no luck
I was using the adobe test page to see if it was working as it would be clear if it was the flash or the web page as it did not work on anything.http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
I followed the "Another Tip" section but again to no avail
Yes I have fully updated the system

I have tied the other browsers and there is no joy with any of them. So far I have Chromium, Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Am confused as to why it will not work, also Shockwave does not work but that is another issue.

Hi,

what size is your graphics card??, is it sharing the memory??, you may simply not have enough resources to run the media, can you play other types of media on your PC??.

You said you only have 256MB RAM, is that correct??.

I am not sure of the spec of the graphics card as it is an old'ish laptop. It has 512 RAM and an mobile Athlon 2000+ processor in it.

I think that it should be pleanty powerful enough to play flash as it plays movies fine

Try this.
Get connected to the internet, open terminal and write
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Let it install, then reboot and try again.

Hi,

have you installed the drivers for your graphics card:

System Settings > Hardware > Additional Drivers (ATI and Nvidia only).

Also, in the update link, try running "dpkg":

After much research, this is a known bug with the latest version of Adobe Flash not running on older processors without the SSE2 instruction set.

I had to downgrade to an earlier version of flash and lock it.

https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?eve ... id=3154276
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/968504

For me, this is SOLVED. Well, sorta.

You will be asked for your password which will not show any asterisks so be careful!

If you want to get a full hardware listing:

Code:
sudo lshw

When I did this I was looking for mouse/touchpad but could not find anything - at least if you do the latter we can determine make and model of laptop!

Did this and this is what I got back

Unfortunatly nothing is making it work for me. Midori keeps crashing and Opera, Firefox, Chrome & Chromium are all unable to display flash or shockwave embeded pages. XP is looking good at this stage :(

Don't just use the code on that posting - you have to go to the liberiangreek page and follow the instructions there!

I have followed everyone's instructions to the letter and it appears that everything has gone smothly but still no luck getting flash to work. As for Midori, I am not impressed as it keeps crashing, I am not sure if it is the Flash issue or not but it did not even like having this page open and the liberiangreek page, it crashed.

Any other suggestions?? as I have fully exhausted my knowledge of ubuntu and have tried everything that came up in searches.

Hi BD,

I have only just noticed that you are trying to use the "Windows" test function for Adobe Flash, that won't work!!.

Try installing the complete Mono set and see if that helps:

sudo apt-get install mono-complete

Also, you might want to try out "mahara-mediaplayer" which is an alternative "Flash" player!!.

sudo apt-get install mahara-mediaplayer

I am not sure how it works or whether it will work at all, I tried removing "Flash" but all I did was end up screwing up Flash Player entirely :D :D :D :D
(USE AT YOUR OWN RISK) :!: :!: :!: :!:

Hi all
Switched from Win7 to zorin 6 about a month ago & love it!
I am currently on an antiquated lappy nearly 13 years old running lite just as an experiment & had the same flash problems tried most from this thread to no avail so I installed lightspark through the software center & video worked instantly in both opera & FF but no sound, apparently its something to do with /etc/xdg/lightspark.conf I am not to worried as I am just playing with this old lappy but thought I would give a heads up to other readers that may have this trouble.
Great site BTW with great people, it has been most helpful to me
Regards
D
Edit; right clicked on a youtube clip & ticked "sound" works great now :D

Thanks swarfendor for both the warm welcome & advice, the truth is that dear little lappy is long past its sellby date & ready for silicon heaven its been in a cupboard for years & I am just playing around with it, I put Zorin on my main PC & love it, I still have 7 installed but lost bootloader but thats a different story, lappy is running both XP & lite well
