I was running sudo apt-get update and for some reason get this:

W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security/restricted i386 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security/main i386 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_main_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security/multiverse i386 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_multiverse_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security/universe i386 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_universe_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise/partner i386 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_partner_binary-i386_Packages)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

I had been trying to follow instructions listed http://www.zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2358 and http://www.zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247 . I was doing that because for some reason whenever I ticked the checkboxes in software sources, it would show the check mark then the mark would disappear. I was on the other page because like that poster I still have that file in update sources that won't go away and says "1 update has been selected. 85KB will be downloaded." Again, nothing shows under "Changes" or "Description". The long and short of it all is that now I have this above list when I run 'sudo apt-get update'. Have tried the fix broken packages on the command line and in synaptic, the clean, autoclean, autoremove. Not sure what to do from here.

I hope this isn't too confusing. I'd appreciate your help getting this figured out. Thank you. :?

To update, Ubuntu repos has to check whether your distro is genuine Ubuntu. You won't be able to tick those boxes as they are sort of blocked by developers. Here is an easy way.

sudo nautilus, or gksudo nautilus

Go to /etc and go down until you find lsb-release, then open it and delete Zorin OS and write Ubuntu like this;
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 12.04 LTS"

Save the file and do apt-get update and you'd get what you want.

And you can try another way too. Uninstall Synaptic Package Manager, and re-install it. Your problems would go away.

sudo apt-get remove synaptic
then,
sudo apt-get install synaptic

Thanks so much for your quick reply, bkotter. I went to the lsb-base folder and there is nothing inside to open. Should I just create a text file with the above and put it in there? Any thoughts?

Ok, I checked those things. The lsb-release file already has Ubuntu info there (and not Zorin). Also, the zorin.info file is in the /usr/share/python-apt/templates directory.

The one problem seems to have been handled (I don't see that message that a file is available to update now--so good), but the problem of running sudo apt-get update still gives me:

Reading package lists... Done

Any other suggestions?

The guy you are thanking appears to be deleted from the forum. I was wondering why, as his psots were entertaining. :(
