Hi,

Im new to this forum, also new to linux.

What happens is the no matter which distro of linux I install, my wireless card never get detected. I got an HP dv4
when I type iwconfig in the terminal I get the following:

lo no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID: off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-power 0 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:on

eth0 no wireless extensions.

Before i was able to fix this with an ethernet cable an update. but now i dont have an ethernet cable so what im trying to do is download the driver from Broadcom which has an tar.gz extencion. I really suck in the terminal so i need help on how to install this i have i try lots of tutorials but i cant get it to work. thank you

Hi,

just click on the install button (top right) anyway, it is giving you that warning because it is a 3rd party package and you can safely install it!!.

Hi,

all I can suggest at the moment is that you borrow a network cable from someone for 5 minutes and open system settings > hardware > additional drivers and install the drivers that way, it is sooooooo much easier!!.

Have you also tried installing this package as "root".

Press Alt + F2 and enter:

gksudo nautilus

when your home folder opens, go to the package and double click it and see if it will install as root. (Right click the package > properties > allow executing file)

Navigate to the folder you have downloaded the .deb file. i.e. if it is in your Downloads folder, open terminal and write
Code:
cd /home/yourusername/Downloads

(replace with your username)

then
Code:
sudo dpkg -i broadcom-sta-common_5.100.82.112-4_all.deb

First of all, as I don't even now what is your wireless card model, could you please open terminal and post back the results of the following commands?

Code:
lspci
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all

As I see you have the BCM4312 LP-PHY driver.

This driver usually works just by opening additional drivers and installing the recommended STA broadcom driver.

Open terminal and write
Code:
jockey-gtk

In the window that will open click on "enable" and wait for it to load and be installed.
Reboot and see if it works.

Also in terminal write
Code:
sudo rfkill unblock all

(your bluetooth is soft-blocked)

I did it but in order to activate I need Internet access, so I guess I will have to go and buy the cable.

No you don't need internet access. I am doing the same thing in a Dell laptop I have in the office in which I am loading the live USB of Zorin.
It has the same wireless driver BCM4312 LP-PHY.
I have no ethernet cables, no wifi, no nothing.
I just enable the recommended STA broadcom driver for the wifi to work and it even works without rebooting (even if it asks for a reboot after it's loaded).

Try again.

Also, since you have installed the BCM_drivers_all.deb, open terminal and write
Code:
sudo modeprobe b43

and check if the wireless lights up.

P.s.: Have you run the
Code:
sudo rfkill unblock all

?

if yes, post back again the result of
Code:
sudo rfkill list all

You don't need to prepare imageshack images. Just copy and paste the results here within [code][/code*] brackets. (without the asterisk)

Ok the command sudo modeprobre b43 = command not found

Code:
sudo rfkill list all

0: hp-wifi wireless LAN
Soft blocket: no
hard blocket: no

When I click activate, i get a box saying downloading and installing driver. after that the failed message

The correct command is
sudo modeprobe b43

not
sudo modprobre b43

Have you spelled it correctly?

Also try this in terminal
Code:
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

and then
Code:
sudo modprobe wl

migu183

Sat Aug 25, 2012 10:43:17 pm

Sorry I did spelled it wrong. Still nothing happens.

and my bluetooth is not soft block anymore

Code:
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
I get:
failed to fetch http:/archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/

Code:
modprobe wl
I get
FATAL: Module wl not found

Unfortunately you need this package, i.e. the "bcmwl-kernel-source".
Installing this package is the same as enabling the recommended STA driver from additional drivers. If you can find the deb package of it and install it like I showed you, I am pretty certain that the wifi will work. It will install the "wl" module that you need.

Otherwise you need to borrow or buy an ethernet cable and just enable the driver.

This is what I found, and it works great for me.
If your driver is STA and have no Internet access.
Browse through the Live usb/cd the lates Ubuntu version. Navigate and install the packages listed.
1. /pool/main/d/dkms
2. /pool/main/p/patch
3. /pool/main/f/fakeroot
4. /pool/restricted/b/bcmwl

Next in the Terminal
Code:
Jockey-gtk

An activate the STA

Code:
Sudo modprobe –r b43 ssb wl

Code:
Sudo modprobe wl

Hi,

the best way to install a single .deb package is to use "gdebi", right click any deb package and open with "gdebi".

To install gdebi, open a terminal and paste this command:

sudo apt-get install gdebi
