Hi Guys
Since my recent applied fixes in my earlier post - in relation to continued install problems
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2791#p12747

I have today incurred my first sysem crash :-
nautilus 1:3.42-Obuntu (origin Ubuntu)

any insight as to why this may still be an ongoing problem of system crashing or should i be heading the advise of the Graphics card as being a major player in this os.
Thanks

Hi A1,

have you tried running "fsck" and "dpkg" from the recovery mode, I would say that with so many errors it has something to do with the hard drive and/or a corrupt original install!!.

If you don't have too much already on the drive, I would do a new install and see if things get better or worse!!.

Thanks for the reply Wolfman.
I have ran this sequence of events again "dpkg" and "fsck" from the recovery menu

I am a little reluctant to try a new install, as it may not allow me - and in addition this is the most stable the system has been since casrring out your suggestions.
If the system fails any more i will have to take this root, in the mean time i will have to wait and see if thhings inprove any.

Hi swarfendor437 thank you for your reply
In regards to the "reference to a package that is not an official Zorin one!" what was the package you notice?

As the only thing that i have implemented is the Rootkits install namley:-
[STICKY] Keeping your system free of 'Rootkits'

Other installs were
Playonlinux update
and installed Quicken - (however i notice the date format in Quicken is not Correct MM/DD/YY - Instead of DD/MM/YY)
MS Office 2007

However i found that chkrootkit was not instaled by default and i had to install it along with Rkhunter.

its using the American ****** system!!!!!!!. (I'm sure you knew that but I thought I would point it out to you!!)

swarfendor437 wrote:Hi alpha1, I don't know what the screenshot was referring to when it states "not an official Zorin package" - that is all that shows up on your screenshot. I certainly don't think that either of those rootkit programs are likely to be the cause of the problem as I have both installed and not had any crashes. I was surprised to read that chrootkit was not installed by default as I am pretty certain that it was present in earlier incarnations of Zorin. With regards to Wolfman's comments on the date format - does Quicken have a 'locale' setting at point of install? Also, are your locales up-to-date in respect of language packs installed and that you have applied the settings 'system-wide' and rebooted?

Thanks swarfendor437 for the reply
Points noted.

Not to my understanding - but i was of the impression Quicken date was from the system date and time i may be mistaken here.
In addition i have applied system wide the language packs and rebooted but to no avail i have tried this on several occasions.

Will try again.

Nevertheless i have now noticed the following errors on the updating of the system:-
Not sure how this affects the system?
However in the mean time a new update has be notified - and acted upon no problem so far.

Hi Guys
Ok i have once again re ran the Lang Pk - to see if this will affect the date format - this was already install and all is as was the same.

This is your problem> Intel Graphics 128MB Go the store and buy you a real graphics card=Geforce-210. Small graphics card with a lot of gusto for it's price. You just have to make sure your power supply meets the minimum specs. for your system or what ever you decide to purchase. My 9 year old son rebuilt a Dell OPTIPLEX Pent-4 cpu 2gb Ram Geforce-210 with the original power supply. Zorin Os 6 core x32 and it works fine. The only thing he had to disable in Compiz was the Animations. And low and behold this 9 year old has a working computer. The only thing I helped him with was Compiz. Before he put the new graphics card in the PC it was the exact or close to same setup your running. It was crashing freezing locking up what ever could happen. Don't take my word for it. Take my 9 year olds word for it,he's the one that actually proved that it would actually work.

swarfendor437 wrote:Hi Alpha1, Going back to that Google package - I have had similar prompt - did you uninstall Chrome by any chance? I have my suspicions that when you uninstall Chrome there is still some reference to it in the system as I have had a similar message when running update manager. Also of interest is that if no other browser is installed and you remove Chrome via the Terminal using bash commands, it then downloads and installs Firefox, and if you uninstall that it downloads Chromium! All weird stuff! Is the machine still crashing or is it running more stable now?

Hi swarfendor437

Yes you are right there, i have uninstalled Chrome and i use Firefox.
Itis more stabe but i still get the crash reports generated, normaley after login in and have to logou and back again.

Hi A1,

what DE are you using??, if you don't want the Win 7 look you can remove Compiz and run Gnome 2 look but you will also lose Ubuntu Tweak!!. (You can install "gnome-tweak-tool" AKA: "Advanced Settings")

Compiz may be biting into your system resources and if you don't want fancy flashy things happening to your desktop, try it out!!., make sure you switch to G2 before removing Compiz!!.

alpha1 I think I found the 4 duplicate entries in your sources.list.

They are the following (located almost towards the end of the file):
Code:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse

and
Code:
deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main

Open terminal and write:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

In the file that will open locate the above lines and put a "#" key before every second line (thus leaving operational only the one line and commenting out the duplicate).
The lines should become like this:

madvinegar wrote:alpha1 I think I found the 4 duplicate entries in your sources.list.

They are the following (located almost towards the end of the file):
Code:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse

and
Code:
deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main

Open terminal and write:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

In the file that will open locate the above lines and put a "#" key before every second line (thus leaving operational only the one line and commenting out the duplicate).
The lines should become like this:
Code:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
#deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe
#deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse
#deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse

and
Code:
deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main
#deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main

Save, exit, and then in terminal write again
Code:
sudo apt-get update

and see if you get any errors.

Hi A1,

have you tried my update thread??:

"Error messages about "Duplicate Sources":

If you get error messages about duplicate source lists or similar, you can enter the following commands in a terminal to solve this problem:

sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists/*

Then:

sudo apt-get update

The other option is to simply ignore them which won't make them go away, but it still works for me!!."

@WM I have already asked Alpha1 to do that. (see page 2 of this topic).

@Alpha1 please post back the result of
Code:
find /etc/apt -name '*.list' -exec bash -c 'echo -e "\n$1\n"; cat -n "$1"' _ '{}' \;

Ok. Do again a
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and put a "#" sign before these two lines
Code:
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise restricted main multiverse universe #Added by software-properties
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security restricted main multiverse universe

so it become
Code:
#deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise restricted main multiverse universe #Added by software-properties
#deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security restricted main multiverse universe

then do again a
Code:
sudo apt-get update

and see if you get any errors.
