[SOLVED] Printing with a Canon MP620 does not work

Rens

Sun Sep 02, 2012 12:32:51 pm

Yesterday I installed Zorin OS on the Acer Aspire One from my daughter. This went without any problem, and it is running fine. It used to have Ubuntu on it, but my daughter didn like interface, and since Zorin has more the look and feel of Windows 7, she wanted to give it a try.

Now I am stuck in printing on a Canon MP620, which is wireless connected to the home network. I used the steps on this page, http://rackerua.com/2011/05/mp-620-630- ... installer/ .
Drivers seem to be installed, but printing commands seem not to be send to the printer.
Scanning with Simple Scan does work though.

Any one any idea? Searching the web for 2 hours and trying things without any succes does one make not too happy :(

Hi Wolfman, thanks for youre answer.

System is up to date. The warning "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall" in your first link is something I have seen come by, but Alt+F2 and entering system-configure-printer does not seem to help.

When I print a test page the message 'printing on canon MP620' appears, which changes then in printing complete. Weird thing is nothing comes out of the printer. Printing works fine from a Windows computer. Could this be a driver problem?

I tried this, but no luck.

"You should have the canon BJNP protocol available. Click the network discovered Printer, either Canon MP620 or 630 Allow the configuration window to search the for the Drivers "
The printer is not discovered, and what is meant with "You should have the canon BJNP protocol available"? In what way should I have it available?

No luck either. :(
Drivers are installed, but the printer has not been found. When printing a testpage I get the message that the page has been printed, but it hasn't.

Hi,

have you looked at the system settings manager > printers??.

Yes, the printer is there, only there is a square with a questionmark in front of it.

Scanning is does still work, btw

I tried this, http://rackerua.com/2011/05/mp-620-630- ... installer/ , also on a standard Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in Virtual Box, but with the same result. Somewhere in the proces there is a mentioning of the 'canon networking field', something I don't see at all.

"Manual Networking Setup

Select Canon Networking type
A bar will open up and allow you to input the Printer protocol, IP and port
The input should look like: bjnp://X.X.X.X:8611 (Replace "X" with the IP address of the Printer)
Now click forward through the menu and make sure you select the Canon Driver set with the "MP630 ver.3.00" Driver.
Complete the installation and print a test page."
I can't do these steps.

Hi Rens,

try this:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp610linux/

See what happens after you install this driver set!!.

I am completely lost. It gets all too technical now.
I also tried this (I think I used it when installing this same printer on an older version Ubuntu), but libcups2 is installed instead of libcupsys2, which causes an error when installing the cnijfilter files.
Code:
You will need these files before we install the printer:

    cnijfilter-common_2.80-1_i386.deb
    cnijfilter-mp520series_2.80-1_i386.deb
    canonmx700.ppd (rename the .txt part!)
    cups-bjnp-0.5.3.tar.gz

Now that we've got those... we can install everything!

Canon MX700 Installation:

Code:
sudo apt-get install libcupsys2 libcupsys2-dev
cd <downloaded files directory>
sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i cnijfilter-common_2.80-1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i cnijfilter-mp520series_2.80-1_i386.deb
tar xvzf cups-bjnp-0.5.3.tar.gz
cd cups-bjnp-0.5.3/
sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr
sudo make
./bjnp
sudo make install

Note that sudo may not be needed for the 2 of the last 4 steps, but I used it when I installed... if someone can tell me for sure it's not needed, then I'll edit this post.
Once that is done, we can now add the printer...

Code:
System > Administration > Printing
New > Printer > Canon MX700 > Forward
Select PPD > <Select your PPD File> > Forward
Name it > Done!
Print a test page and it should work.

I give up now. There is another isue with not being able to mount Windows shares. 4th day I did spend time on this.
Thanks for all the input and patience, but my daughter has to get used to walk with an USB stick to a Windows computer. :(

Hi,

you can search for single files here:

http://linuxappfinder.com/

Did you have the printer connected and switched on when you installed the OS??.

Rens

I did not have the printer switched on while installing, since it did not think it was necessary.

Hi,

if you cannot get the files you need installed, I would only suggest a re-install but this time with the printer plugged in and switched on, it should install automatically with all drivers etc!!.

I don't really know what else to suggest as I don't have a Canon printer!!.

I found this instruction (in German), and followed every step: http://blog.schnattern.at/canon-pixma-m ... buntu-1104 but still no luck.
As I send a testpage to the printer there is a message about a connection error. I can enter the webinterface of the printer through Firefox though. weird

I could install the printer without any cable, on 3 other Windows machines. I don't know though about the initial install when I got the printer new.

Rens

I used a cable now to connect the printer with the laptop. It is recognized as a local printer, and added to the list without any problems. tespage is sent to the printer, no error, but also no print.

Thank you. I will try later today. As I had the printer listed twice, for the network printer this message was visible: "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba client enabled on firewall." What does it mean?

Rens

I gave it another try today, and tried Linux Mint, recommended by others. Also no luck. Thanks for all the help, I am going to spend time on things I DO understand. ;)

Status sofar: printing through a USB cable works (but I bought a network printer for a good reason.. ;) )

On a Dutch computer forum I got some other tips, and tried this: http://projects.nikenglund.com/Printing ... ith_Ubuntu

Now there is another error showing in Cups (http://localhost:631):
Idle - File "/usr/lib/cups/backend/bjnp" has insecure permissions (0100755/uid=1000/gid=1000)

I tried some other permissions for this file, but alas no progress. Anyone ever seen this error message before?

Hi,

you should install the package "gnome-system-tools" which will add an icon in the main menu under "Users and Groups", armed with this tool you can setup accounts and how the guest accounts react with the OS, you can select how much access the guest has with regards to network or printing and other areas of the PC!!.

I installed it, but not even the administrator can print. :P

Hi,

all I can suggest is you play around with the settings, I cannot really suggest anything else at the moment; sorry

Rens

I am trying things at the moment. I managed to generate the same error about the file permissions on a live Linux Mint installation, I think there might be some progress later on.

Rens

Mon Sep 24, 2012 8:50:17 pm

It's done, it is working, don't ask me why.
I removed the printer from 'Printers', and only did all the steps in http://projects.nikenglund.com/Printing ... ith_Ubuntu , also adding the printer just through the menu.
Drivers were already on the harddrive. I did the same in the Linux Mint installation, and here only the rear tray for the paper was chosen, no matter whatsetting I choose. I think with the steps in http://rackerua.com/2011/05/mp-620-630- ... installer/ the correct drivers were already installed, the drivers that are normally installed pick only the rear tray.

Wew, Linux is cool, only sometimes it takes some time, or one does not see the solution. ;)
