But, if you go to a webpage with flash without flashplayer, it will automatically tell you and with a click of a button install it

Hi Chris,
firstly, never copy damaged media to another disk and the burn speed should "ALWAYS" be set to the slowest possible speed that your drive and the burn media allow.
I don't use Google browser or any Google products except their search engine so I cannot help you there, maybe another forum member has an answer for you.

I see from your screenshot you'r using an old version from the repository, I would recommend that you download and install the latest version .0.9.3 from http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net It's just a matter of double clicking on the downloaded deb package and the Software Centre will automatically install it. I find this version only deletes what I ask. The older version always used to delete all my Banshee album artwork ever though I had nothing clicked for banshee and I had to manually re add them which![]()

lets start at the beginning, Zorin is Ubuntu based and as such is the same as Ubuntu but has a few bits `n` pieces added, Zorin uses almost exactly the same repos as Ubuntu and if there are problems with the Ubuntu repos, the whiplash will be felt by any other Ubuntu based system!. (See topic: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3009 )
This takes us on to the next matter, if you are having problems with your system and running "dpkg" doesn't solve it, we can try other things!. When you did your updates recently, where you asked to "Replace" files and did you do so?, I have said in my guide about updating that I recommend replacing files with the newer version, if you didn't do that, that may be the reason that your screen is garbled as you say!.
Restart your PC in recovery mode and then activate the "Network" which requires a network cable connection, then go to the option "Drop to root shell prompt" and enter the following commands:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
then:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
did you get any messages about your graphics card the last time you did "dpkg" ?, and did you ignore them ?.
What are your software sources set to ?.
Let me know how you get on.

Ext4 for root and home but your extra partition should be either NTFS or FAT32; and all drives should be logical.
I don't know why your PC would be sluggish, swap is rarely used with a rig that has 4GB RAM so clean it and see if is any better.

4. If I re install according to the links posted, will again have to install when the newer version of Zorin 6 is released?

Thanks Wolfman for replying & the posted links, they did the job & audio came back after running those terminal commands.
1. For the 1st time in approx 20 plus clean installs did not get the message after install "genome-keyring-daemon not responding" but had no audio which got fixed by your expert assistance.
2. Than performed another clean install & updated again, now did get the message after install about not responding but this time have no issues with the audio....strange?
3. During this install my machine's router got unplugged & had to perform a partial upgrade. During that process it displayed a message "are you upgrading Ubuntu version......."clicked on NO.......is that correct or should have clicked on Yes?
4. Despite that audio is there, do you recommend that Medibuntu Repo should be activated along with Pulse Audio Manager ( viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1852 & viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2023) ?
5. Still on reboot do see the message " bytes can't be read OR written......... broken pipe.....OK" should it be ignored or is there a fix?
6. When shouldthis be installed, after Mediabuntu repo & Pulse audio or it doesnt matter?
- Code:
sudo apt-get install awn-applets-all
7. Lastly methods to check that OS installed is correct, stable, updated & malware free?
8. Got an email reply from devas that update manager shall install Zorin Ultimate 6.1, no need for downloading again.
Thanks again & hoping to hear from you,
Regards!

Multimedia player, encoder, Libav file, video, device handling, video filtering, format library, video scaling, video post processing.....?

Chris.
After your last updates installed, did you re-boot the machine? Also try your Bleach-bit to clean out your system - there could be old updates stuck in apt cache.

Chris2030 wrote:(Solved Font size in Deconf editor:)
Thanks for the reply.
I didnt know that had to double click the line with 1.0, infront of the text.
Have kept it at 1.1 & looks better & lesser strain on these old eyes.
1 more question Wolfman, what settings do you keep for the following:
Dconf-Editorr Settings:
Click on Applications > System Tools > dconf Editor and drag it to the desktop (see below for info about adding icons to the desktop) and then double click it to open it. Once dconf has started you might want to make a couple of changes, the following are some important ones I used:
Show date and day in clock:
Dconf Editor > Com > Canonical > Indicator > Datetime > Show Date/Show Day
Change global font size:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Desktop > Interface > Text-scaling-factor 1.0 (1.0 = font size 10. and 1.1 would be font size 11 and so on) (Mine is set to 1.2 = Font size 12)
Change icon size on desktop:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Nautilus > Icon-View > Default-Zoom-Level = Small
Show/Hide buttons:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Gnome Panel > Layout > Toplevels > Top Panel
Show/Hide Desktop icons = Trash/Computer/Home;
Dconf-Editor > Org > Gnome > Nautilus > Desktop
Stop Media Auto Mounting:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Desktop > Media-Handling > Automount/Automount-open/Autorun Never

Adding a second AWN panel to your Window7/XP desktop:
Right click the bottom panel > Dock Preferences > Preferences > Add Dock > Orientation > Top > Behaviour > Intellihide (assuming you want it hidden when not in use!) Also click on Start AWN automatically.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply but that is not the issue or solution.
Am facing 2 issues:
#1 is : Each time I reboot or shut down my machine, (running Zorin 6 Ultimate) see a message displayed on the black back ground " Bytes could not be written......Broken pipe"?
2. #2 is: At the login/greeting screen where the user name is the screen is black for a couple of seconds before it turns to blue, once I type my password have no issue logging in.
Hope it is clear now?
I don't get stuck at the login / user name, password screen BUT it is black as stated for 2 seconds than turns blue.
The other is Broken pipe error on each reboot or shut down.
Hoping to hear from the Zorin team soon, kindly provide a solution since it's been 6 months plus & am getting tired of hit & trial clean reinstalls, which probably have done plus 30 time with updating.
Regards!
Chris.

It seems that your downloaded file was corrupted.
Please check the md5sum of your downloaded .7z file to make sure if it is not corrupted. The correct sum is: 47bc5eea7ac8767945b667853d6b4b27
If you get another sum please re-download the file with the latest version of Firefox without any third-party download managers.
To check the md5sum of the file in Windows please use the WinMD5Sum software from Nullriver: Download link
You can use the following program to check the md5sum in Linux distros (including Zorin OS and Ubuntu): http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/08/chec ... -gui-tool/

If you follow the steps, you will be able to get the "Plop Boot Manager" as an option when your Grub appears at the time of booting.
Based on what you have put as content of your grub.cfg, you should be updating the menu entry for plop boot manager to:
*************************************
menuentry "Plop Boot Manager" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 112bb7de-0c4b-4120-9adc-2feb8b4570e5
linux16 /boot/plpbt.bin
}
*************************************
As a root user, you should paste this in the 40_custom file that will be located at /etc/grub.d. Now since Zorin is based on ubuntu, if you enter the command "gksu nautilus /etc/grub.d" into your terminal, it should open the location where 40_custom is as root.
Now you open this file, paste the above text between astrix, click save and close the file.
Then on terminal window type the command "sudo update-grub" and it should use this 40_custom file and update your grub.cfg file. In order to make sure, check if it is indeed the case.
Once confirmed, reboot.
From there you select Plop Boot Manager and then in plop boot manager you select boot from USB which then allows you to boot from USB.
Ok, so to make a bootable usb for any linux distro (zorin included) you will need to use a tool like unetbootin or [lili] linux live usb creator (http://www.linuxliveusb.com).if you are using windows liliis best though unetbootin is oldest.
Once you have created the live usb, follow above steps to enable your laptop to be able to boot from the live usb you have created.
you can copy paste the above using any text editor (gedit on ubuntu). Basically, you will first open 40_custom using the text editor and then paste and save.
Updating grub this way is the safest approach, it is completely reversible. Just delete the content in 40_custome, run update-grub and you are back. Though, IMO there is no need to revert. Having plop boot manager in grub menu is good for future use.

Chris2030 wrote:Thanks Swarf for your very detailed expert reply, which I appreciate big time.
I have a few questions:
1. Are my Sony machine's specs good enough to run Zorin Ultimate 6.1, cause at times on system monitor see 500 MiB of memory being used of the 2 GiB & 50 kb of swap of the 5 GiB OR should I install it on my Dell XPS1730?
2. When shall that 86 kb update issue be fixed?
3. Will another install give me the same items in Update Manager > Settings > Other softwares.......like Opera stable that I have now?
4. Should the Settings of Update Manager be changhed or left as they are like source codes & Opera?
Thanks again & Hoping to hear from you,
Regards!
Chris.
