Kopete take a while to get connected & very frequently gets disconnected vs Pengin which connects instantly & remains stable.............any special reasons?

Hi Chris,

now you are getting somewhere :D , now all you need to do is to click on every single item in the lists and let us all know what they do :D :D :D :D .

I am only joking of course, as and when I (or others) find out what things do; I will add them to the post install guide, the ones I have posted thus far are the only ones I know to date.

Play around with the res settings and you'll find out either to your advantage or disadvantage.

System Settings > Hardware > Displays > and change the resolution, you can revert it if you don't want a particular setting within a few seconds.

For basic theming, use Ubuntu Tweak > Themes, for more advanced settings; you would have to learn a hell of a lot in a short space of time.

A couple of examples:

Hi Chris

I see from your screenshot you'r using an old version from the repository, I would recommend that you download and install the latest version .0.9.3 from http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net It's just a matter of double clicking on the downloaded deb package and the Software Centre will automatically install it. I find this version only deletes what I ask. The older version always used to delete all my Banshee album artwork ever though I had nothing clicked for banshee and I had to manually re add them which   REALLY ANNOYED   me.

Team viewer has nothing to do with a TV program.
Team viewer is a remote control of your desktop program. http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx ... 3godiXEA2g

As for watching TV, and in case you have a digital TV card, I would recommend using Kaffeine. You can find it in software center.

Hi Chris,

I am not an expect ( just a simple novice ) but I hope I can help answer your questions ( and if I make a mistake, maybe one of the kind and very knowledgeable members can correct me )

1. Yes, I do believe there is a task manager of sorts. ( Start --> System Tools --> System Monitor )

2. Considering msconfig is a windows configuration, I don't believe Zorin has it. Though they may have something similar in nature, I am not exactly sure what that would be, sorry.

3. This one I'm not sure of either. Are you referring to the option in the task bar in windows that hides them when they are not active / in-use? That is a good question, I haven't noticed that while using Zorin - but it may be possible.

hi Chris,

when you want to remove an app, the easiest way is to use Synaptic, simply search for the app you want to remove and right click it, then click on "Mark for complete removal" and then on "Apply", this will take out all the files for the app including the config files.

You can safely download (rules about malicious software still appy even in the Linux world, download from trusted sources only) any debian based packages and install them with "Gdebi" which you should have already installed. Right click and open with "gdebi".

In a terminal:

sudo apt-get install gdebi

Hi Chris,

if you are only booting Zorin and don't want anything else, when you select something else, you only select the root partition for formatting and leave the home partition unmarked, you still need to select it again as home but all your data and settings will remain intact, you don't need to repair grub as the default action during this process is to select the boot partition on "SDA" which is automatically selected for you!.

firstly, never copy damaged media to another disk and the burn speed should "ALWAYS" be set to the slowest possible speed that your drive and the burn media allow.

Hi Chris,

I don't use Chrome so I cannot help as I already stated.

Always burn at the slowest speed as I already stated.

Snapshots get saved to a temp file which are erased once you shut down the system, I cannot tell you off-hand in which folder, you need to look at the settings of the snapshot app.

You cannot remove the envelope as it is part of a whole packge of icons on the taskbar, if you do remove it, you will also lose the clock etc.

Hi,

you don't need a 3rd party package for BB as it is already in the repo, via a terminal:

sudo apt-get install bleachbit

if you don't already have it installed.

Install "gdebi" for single package installation:

sudo apt-get install gdebi

For Google Chrome, go here and click on download, select the correct package you need, either 32 or 64 bit, once downloaded, right click and open with "Gdebi".

Hey Wolfman

"you don't need a 3rd party package for BB as it is already in the repo,"

The BB in the repo is an old one, the link is for the latest version from the BB site.
I think it's worth upgrading even if only for the new desktop icons.

Zorin 6 Glitches?

Hi there,

I have found following glitches in Zorin 6 32 bit Ultimate.

1. Z start menu becomes unresponsive?

2. Janitor should be removed from Tweaks.

3. Boot up is a bit slow vs Ubuntu?

4. Should give language options, tries to install most langues & there updates after install?

Thanks.

Another experience with Zorin 6 Ultimate fresh install:

Thanks Wolfman for your reply.

I re installed Zorin 6 & have the following queries. Wanna go step wise to finally decide whether it suite my machine & me.

1. After re-install gave 2 errors same as earlier dameon keyring still running.......what does that mean & how does one fix that?

2. Haven't installed the 665.8 MB, 536 updates yet, just want to ask whether the default settings for Updates > Software sources > Zorin software , other soft wares, Updates, Authentication, statistics are fine or need to be tweaked & is the timing to check for updates fine or should be changed?

3. Should dkpg be run after updates are installed?

4. During start next to user name shows various options like Genome, Zorin, Zorin fall back, is the default Zorin fine?

5. Can Chromium browser be installed along with G Chrome, if yes how?

Hoping to hear from you as always so that I can decide whether to stay or quit,

Hi there Wolfman,

After reading your sticky I ran dpkg before updating, once it was done & I logged in the screen was flashing llike hell, had to reboot & now am updating...........

What went wrong, its only 1 OS on 1 machine......why is Zorin so unstable & unreliable or my fault?

I ran dpkg only coz you wrote to run immediately after install before updating...........

If this time i mess up I shall follow into my nephew's shoes & install Ubuntu...........at least its stable & support is great & one can install what one requires.

As I always say I feel Zorin is too many things added with out glitches unremoved...........

Kindly correct me & convince me the feeling I once had that Zorin is the best Linux distro & better than even W7.

1. During Updating the manager froze.

2. Despite during & after install had checked English language, it installed some language packs couldn't read since it was quick, how do I find & get rid of them?

3. Message displayed Replace changes in /etc/issue.net with later version of config files?

I mean one never get such messages with Ubuntu install..........

Kindly reply & assist.........if i'd posted these 3 post in Buntu forums would have revived at least a dozen responses.....but why would I post coz Buntus never give errors during install or updating on my machine.

Hi Chris,

lets start at the beginning, Zorin is Ubuntu based and as such is the same as Ubuntu but has a few bits `n` pieces added, Zorin uses almost exactly the same repos as Ubuntu and if there are problems with the Ubuntu repos, the whiplash will be felt by any other Ubuntu based system!. (See topic: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3009 )

This takes us on to the next matter, if you are having problems with your system and running "dpkg" doesn't solve it, we can try other things!. When you did your updates recently, where you asked to "Replace" files and did you do so?, I have said in my guide about updating that I recommend replacing files with the newer version, if you didn't do that, that may be the reason that your screen is garbled as you say!.

Restart your PC in recovery mode and then activate the "Network" which requires a network cable connection, then go to the option "Drop to root shell prompt" and enter the following commands:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

then:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

did you get any messages about your graphics card the last time you did "dpkg" ?, and did you ignore them ?.

What are your software sources set to ?.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks Wolfman for your reply.

1. When asked to replace files , I did click on replace that what it suggested. Replaced with newer version as you suggest.

2. Ran dpkg immediately after install as you suggested in your guide & than after updating, but when ever I run dpkg the screen flickers & becomes non responsive?

3. Than the update manager froze & didnt install the file just downloaded them. Used the commands in your guide to install them.

4. Despite that 1 file 86 KB size won't download.

5. Software sources set exactly as shown in your guide.

6. No messages about grahics card.......I have run Zorin on the same machine for 2 months but with glitches.

I ran the following command in recovery mode just coz Wolfman recommended, but still the same.

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

then:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Screen still flickers if I run dpkg, 1 update unable to install, this time followed Wolfman's guide to install, occasional Zorin internal errors, mean to summarize it needs some work & no proper guide to install, glitches.....doesn't suit me & my machine. It's more pain installing than W7.

So installing Ubuntu may not be that fancy but stable.

Thanks for all your help & trying to fix.

Enjoyed being at the forums.

May try some months later if it improves.

Wed Oct 03, 2012 6:44:55 am

Hi Chris,

there is no reason I can think of as to why your screen flickers when you run "dpkg", there are normally no graphic card drivers loaded at that level so it may be your hard drive, start in recovery mode again (I know I know) and run "fsck" (system file check), it may well be your hard drive!!, also, you may want to check the connection of your card to monitor just in case the cable is loose!!.

Have you downloaded any packages other than those from the official repo and did you use force commands to install them??, have you installed 32 bit packages on a 64 bit system or vice versa??. Have you had trouble with 3rd party packages that wouldn't install at all??.

Another thing you can try is to boot into an older kernel which you can select from the boot menu, if the system runs stable under that kernel, update the system again whilst in that kernel and boot normally again, this may be the problem as Swarf has pointed out that a broken kernel may be the culprit!!.

Janitor:

1. Janitor should be removed, it's a mistake to run it rather run BleachBit.

2. Update always displays 1 update 86 KB left.

3. dkpg is buggy.

4. Zorin has so much as I always say & has to be fixed to make it stable as Ubuntu.

My thoughts after comparisons.

Thanks.

2. Gonna install Zorin.

Hi Chris,

"dpkg" isn't buggy, it is the update services that are buggy, you need to change the download location of your software sources to correct this problem, see guide:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

You don't need the sources PPA if you are not going to do any compiling but I leave it activated anyway.

50GB is waaaaaaay too much for root, 20GB is enough, yes!, you can create a 100GB partition for backup.

To check the disk for errors, when you boot the live CD, there is an option to check disk for defaults which you should choose, always burn the disk at the slowest possible speed.

Zorin IS Ubuntu, the only difference is the modding which took place, otherwise it is still Ubuntu!!.

I wanna give it one more try.........if Ubuntu 12.04 runs so smooth why not Zorin since it's based on it as you once said.

Hi Chris,

32 Bit should be: 68d18d52ecb1be390848183bf5ae7228

64 Bit should be: 1c330e4e136db6462e80a72294759d2b

I personally never bother and just burn at the slowest speed and rarely have a problem, I was bollocked by someone for making such a statement but it works for me. (Trust in the "Force" my son :D )

What is important is the updating straight away after install!!, you could download the same ISO a 1000 times and there may always be a bit or a byte missing here and there!!.

Md5 is over rated imo!!!.

You should use Firefox browser as they recommend just in case!!. (I have used other browsers and irt works fine!)

Hi Chris,

afaik, the Intel driver is installed automatically in 12.04, you can check in > System Settings > Hardware > Additional Drivers and see if it is installed and active.

Afaik, you can install the package "gnokii" which gives Nokia support:

sudo apt-get install gnokii

Gnokii is a suite of programs that allows communication with mobile phones.
It currently supports many Nokia mobile phones, all AT capable ones as well as
many Symbian based.
For a list of compatible phones, please visit:
http://wiki.gnokii.org

This package installs the whole suit of programs.

You don't need to download the ISO again, just boot into the "Check Disk For Defects" command at boot time. (The MD5's I posted were from the free versions so they wouldn't do you any good anyway, sorry about that!)

For screen calibration, see here:

1. Using K3b in Ubuntu the same image gives a different md5 vs W7 using Winmd5 gives the exact that was send via email ( 3d793deebdaec4893244882acb8ee079) , so which should I burn?

Regarding partitions:

1. 30 GB / Primary ext4?

2. 125 GB /home Primary ext4?

3. 4 GB Primary swap.

4. all the rest approx 120 GB as Extended ext4 for backups? Will there be a logical in that extended?

Could you care to refine the sizes?

Plan only on installing Zorin, not dual booting either with W7 or any other Linux distro?

One thing am not clear about that can this be done on a live system or do I have to use GParted CD?

Hi Chris,

I have my swap at the beginning; then root then home.

20GB is large enough for root and the home can be whatever size you want with so much space.

Ext4 for root and home but your extra partition should be either NTFS or FAT32; and all drives should be logical.

I don't know why your PC would be sluggish, swap is rarely used with a rig that has 4GB RAM so clean it and see if is any better.

Trial install:

Hi there just installed Zorin have a few questions:

1. Again at the end after completing installation & asking for a reboot displays the same error " dameon keyring not responding" what exactly is this & why does it give this error, have to force restart?

2. Despite choosing English after restart displays that some language packs weren't installed?

3. Used GParted CD to resize & recreate partitions, /30 GB, /home 144 GB, swap 4 GB, 120 GB as extended, logical with an ext 4 file system. After this when was asked to remove the media & restart got a grub rescue error...... any ideas?

4. Inserted Zorin DVD & during install at partitioning clicked on something else & could see all partitions. Assigned file systems, mounts & formatted / & /home. It than displayed a message that no mount has been assigned to extended logical would not be able to access it.......should it be given a mount if yes than what, created that 120 GB to keep backups.

5. Does one have to use GParted CD each time to resize or create a partition or can it be done using installed GParted?

Hoping to hear from you after which shall re install if you recommend.

Hi Chris,

did you read the above??, I did suggest root at the beginning, you have it on the right after 2 partitions, I did suggest NTFS or FAT32 for your extra partition but you chose Ext4.

Have you choosen to encrypt your home during install, this is possibly the reason why the keyring daemon is having a problem!!. (DON'T ENCRYPT YOUR HOME)

2X speed is okay for burning the ISO.

Don't worry about the language packages, you can install them after the main install has finished by clicking on language support in the system settings menu!!.

You got the GRUB error message because you had deleted all the partitions including the one with the Grub loader!!.

You can use Gparted from the live CD.

If you haven't gone too far, I would try it all again!!.

Partitioning as follows:

swap
root
home
NTFS/FAT32 partition

2. I chosse ext4 to store back ups, dont plan on dual boot, why NTFS or FAT32?

3. I did not check encrypt home.

4. Sure I shall try it again.

Hi Chris,

1. not quite sure what you mean, do as I suggest with the partition layout.

2. using NTFS/FAT32 is recommended.

3. good.

4. good.

5. the GRUB bootloader is located in a section that is written to the HDD called MBR or boot sector, it is automatic so you don't have to really worry about it. Using Gparted CD or from the live CD doesn't make that much difference, I prefer to use the Gparted CD and then use the Live CD installer.

Apologize Wolfman my fault, wasn't labelling the partitions as, /, /home got it fixed.

swap 4 GB, root 40 GB, home 144 GB, logical NTFS 110 GB.

Most Linux users keep swap at the end though it doesn't make much difference I think, why do you recommend having it 1st?

I want to complete Zorin installation today along with all approx 680 MB updates........becoming a pain again lol

Mount Point:

Hi,

1. Should a mount point like /dos or /windows be given to the ntfs partition created by GParted, during Zorin install OR a file system name or left alone?

2. Should /, & /home be formatted during Zorin install?

The reason for asking multiple simple questions is that don't want to be installing, re sizing, creating partitions for Zorin size, creating/restoring it's back ups etc......hope you understand my situation. Thanks.

Post Trial:

Hi there,

Installed Zorin & all it's updates.

I tried using Ubuntu a few years back but gave it up coz it was too much of a headcahe at this age. Heard about Zorin few months back & tried it earlier but was disappointed. Than thought to give it 1 more try this time was very precise burnt on 3 media DVDs, checking md5, burning at slowest speed.

This OS looks awesome but dont understand why it doesn't suite my machine, especially when I look at Swarf's or Wolfman's desktop & effects?

Am not into gaming.

Learnt alot from you, to start with madvinegar, Swarf & Wolfman.

In the mean while installed Ubuntu 12.04 & still have it running on my other machine.

To summarize one wants a peace of mind & stability rather than being at the forums 24/7, again at this age.

If am satisfied with a Nokia why go for a iPhone or Samsung or if Audi or a beemer has been trouble free for me why buy a corvette......I think you would agree.

Now coming to post trial:

1. Still see that 1 86KB update, despite checking all in settings including source code as Wolfman suggested?

2. Is there any way, terminal commands to check whether the install is fine?

3. Installed Pidgin but can hardly hear a voice when a contact appears on line or goes or when mail is received vs Ubuntu makes one big noise lol?

Hoping to hear from you as always,

Regards!

Chris.

Reboot & Screen jerky:

1. Why does one need to reboot each time when any app is installed otherwise the settings in the start menu get disconfigured?

2. When logged in Skype the task bar started to shake, same with Kopete?

3. When I reboot see a black screen for a sec before the password sign in window & the same black bar is occasionally seen on task bar just when Zorin starts.........

4. Should I quit in 24 hrs.........Zorin is based on Ubuntu but never faced such issues there.........am I wrong?

Kindly assist so that I remain on Zorin, as I always say it has glitches if it was so good everyone would use this Linux distro...........

Hi there,

Swap size is 4 GB, do you think that some of these issues have to do with it & could be resolved if swap is increased or Zorin reinstalled after using GParted to increase the partition size?

Hi,

you should (imo) not mount your NTFS partition automatically and if you have things already on your /home partition, you don't have to format it if are using the same OS when doing a new install, root must be formatted!!.

Thanks swarf for replying & clarifying.

It happens each time on start up on my machine. Do you think if I change the default wallpaper shall disappear or some terminal command code as shown in the link, but which code, think am too old for it to understand....... ;)

Which wallpapers would you recommend?

It's not a dual boot only Zorin on this machine.

& apprecaite your gesture. :)

Regards!

Chris.

I tried as per the posted link.

Mine displays:

Code:
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ###
set menu_color_normal=white/black
set menu_color_highlight=black/light-gray
if background_color 8,50,90; then
  clear
fi
### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ###

Saved as a backup up, grub.cfg as grub.cfg.txt on desktop, but the backed up grub.cfg.text resides in the root folder desktop & not like in windows.

Would appreciate if you could assist, whenever you get some free time regarding this minor issue...... for you.

Otherwise Zorin is running smooth.

swarf clicked rt on the desktop & then change desktop Background & the options. Theme was blank, clicked to see the options now am stuck with the either 4, presently have Radiance, how can it be brought back to default blank as earlier?

Thanks again, shouldn't fiddle at this age...... ;)

swarf BT does not show on the rt lower task bar or in System Settings, in it's place now see color?

BT scans & picks up the devices as seen in the screenshot but am unable to configure it & wont show on the taskbar?

What should be the preferences, which to be checked/unchecked?

Thanks.

Install & Post install/update queries:

Hi,

Have experimented about 6 installs & have a few queries if you would care to reply to.

1. After a clean install before it asks for a reboot it always displays " gnome-keyring-daemon not responding", at times it's 1 at others 2/3. What exactly is this & why the ambiguity in numbers? Than have to click on force restart.

2. Is it a must to run dpkg immediately after a clean install, in recovery mode before updating Zorin? Hypothetically if it's must & one forgets to run it after install should/can it be run after updating?

3. At times in Update Manager > Settings even when source could hasn't been unchecked when clicked on Settings it is seen checked & Updates are unchecked & nonresponsive, why does this happen, can it be fixed if yes how, while at other times it's fine & when clicked on Settings pops up Updates which can be checked?

4. Why is the System Updating after a clean install NEVER smooth, always hangs at installation after downloading (approx 592 updates size 713 MiB) them all, displaying replace with a newer file, when clicked on that becomes non responsive displaying a message apt running & have to reboot & when clicked on Update Manager displays " Do partial Upgrade" ?

5. During the Partial Upgrade it asks to choose an option out of 4, I usually choose "N" the default, is that correct?

6. That 1 update size 86 KB never disappears lol.

All these happen after clean install, & during installation at something else, / & /home are formatted.

Hoping to hear from you...thanks.

Hi Chris,

all your questions about updating can be found here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

and:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3009

The next version of Zorin 6 will be ready soon, if you can hang on, a newer version with all updates will be available.

Don't worry about not being able to click the update boxes, they are already listed in the main software sources window.

I don't know why the keyring isn't working, did you encrypt your /home??. I recommend you install the package "gnome" and see if the problem still persists.

In a terminal:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome

run the following in a terminal:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

then:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

do you have the Medibuntu repo active?:

Once done, install these packages via a terminal:

sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs faac flac

(Solved Audio) & Some Queries?

Thanks Wolfman for replying & the posted links, they did the job & audio came back after running those terminal commands.

1. For the 1st time in approx 20 plus clean installs did not get the message after install "genome-keyring-daemon not responding" but had no audio which got fixed by your expert assistance.

2. Than performed another clean install & updated again, now did get the message after install about not responding but this time have no issues with the audio....strange?

3. During this install my machine's router got unplugged & had to perform a partial upgrade. During that process it displayed a message "are you upgrading Ubuntu version......."clicked on NO.......is that correct or should have clicked on Yes?

4. Despite that audio is there, do you recommend that Medibuntu Repo should be activated along with Pulse Audio Manager ( viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1852 & viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2023) ?

5. Still on reboot do see the message " bytes can't be read OR written......... broken pipe.....OK" should it be ignored or is there a fix?

6. When should
Code:
sudo apt-get install awn-applets-all
this be installed, after Mediabuntu repo & Pulse audio or it doesnt matter?

7. Lastly methods to check that OS installed is correct, stable, updated & malware free?

8. Got an email reply from devas that update manager shall install Zorin Ultimate 6.1, no need for downloading again.

Thanks again & hoping to hear from you,

Regards!

Cause if you or Wolfman would have said that I did wrong & should have clicked on Yes........would have to reinstall which am tired of by the way ;)

dpkg should always be run in safe mode & should fsck be run after it?

Chris2030 wrote:(Solved Audio) & Some Queries?

Regards!

Chris.

Hi Chris,

answer to # 3 is indeed "NO".

For # 4; you should use the medibuntu repo if you want non-free-codecs etc, you don't have to install Pulse unless you are having problems with your sound playback, if your sound is okay, then leave it as is!.

For # 5, please see this link and it will give you an idea about what it means: http://askubuntu.com/questions/105857/u ... oken-pipes

Fot # 6, it doesn't really matter.

For # 7, just run updates and as long as nothing is flickering or crashing, there is no real need to worry about anything, you can install an Anti Virus software if you so wish, see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1948 There is also Avant and ClamAV which are also both free.

FSCK should only be run in "Recovery Mode" and not in a fully booted system.

The command "sudo dpkg --configure -a" can be run in both full boot and recovery mode although in recovery mode, the option to run "dpkg" is already listed.

I hope this answers all your questions.

Hi Wolfman,

# 1: Read the link about broken pipe, I get this message/error on a reboot immediately after a install even before updating, any ideas how it can be fixed?

# 2: Technically in computer terms what are the advantages of non free codecs from mediabuntu repos vs free codecs?

# 3: Why at times in Update Manger > Settings > Updates one can't check & at other times one can check them?

Just to add to the issue of cannot read write......broken pipes.

After install & before updating I change display to Never dim from default after 10 mins, single click from double click, uncheck wobbly windows & Update center > Settings > Updates...........4 changes in total before updating.

It is only seen on a reboot & not on startup greeters windows......

Which could be the culprit?

Thanks.

After your last updates installed, did you re-boot the machine? Also try your Bleach-bit to clean out your system - there could be old updates stuck in apt cache.

Thanks for the reply.

I didnt know that had to double click the line with 1.0, infront of the text.

Have kept it at 1.1 & looks better & lesser strain on these old eyes.

1 more question Wolfman, what settings do you keep for the following:

Dconf-Editorr Settings:

Click on Applications > System Tools > dconf Editor and drag it to the desktop (see below for info about adding icons to the desktop) and then double click it to open it. Once dconf has started you might want to make a couple of changes, the following are some important ones I used:

Show date and day in clock:
Dconf Editor > Com > Canonical > Indicator > Datetime > Show Date/Show Day

Change global font size:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Desktop > Interface > Text-scaling-factor 1.0 (1.0 = font size 10. and 1.1 would be font size 11 and so on) (Mine is set to 1.2 = Font size 12)

Change icon size on desktop:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Nautilus > Icon-View > Default-Zoom-Level = Small

Show/Hide buttons:
Dconf Editor > Org > Gnome > Gnome Panel > Layout > Toplevels > Top Panel

Show/Hide Desktop icons = Trash/Computer/Home;
Dconf-Editor > Org > Gnome > Nautilus > Desktop

Stop Media Auto Mounting:

Adding a second AWN panel to your Window7/XP desktop:

Right click the bottom panel > Dock Preferences > Preferences > Add Dock > Orientation > Top > Behaviour > Intellihide (assuming you want it hidden when not in use!) Also click on Start AWN automatically.

Hi Chris,

if you update per my suggestions in this link:

you shouldn't have any problems, run "dpkg" immediately after install!!.

The difference between ZorinOS core 6.1 and ZorinOS 6 Ultimate is that 6.1 is the fully updated version of ZorinOS 6 and Ultimate is still Ultimate that has more packages pre-installed but has not been updated like 6.1!!.

Thanks Wolfman for replying.

1. By black screen, mean that each time machine reboots or shuts down see that message " Byte could not be written......Broken pipe", despite that I follow your guide that after install & on 1st boot go in recovery & run dpkg with out cable & it displays 86KB update needs to be installed & keep clicking Y yes & press Enter & than perform the next boot to set the software sources. At that point the screen is flickering so do another reboot & than set & check the software sources........hope this is clear now about the message of broken pipe & black screen.

2. At login/user name/greeting window the screen is black for a couple of secs before turning blue.

Hope have made issues pretty clear?

Once all updating is done have no issues except these 2.

I understand there is alot of apps in the Ultimate Edition but most I don't use.

If they can't be fixed despite strictly following your guide than as might use Ubuntu & install only those apps that I require?

Hoping to hear from you,

Regards

Chris.

PS: Run dpkg with out cable or internet, when it displays a 86 kb update is available should I click on install Yes OR NO?

Than it displays do you wanna continue .....type Y yes or No I click on Y........& lastly press Enter to perform a normal boot?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply but that is not the issue or solution.
Am facing 2 issues:
#1 is : Each time I reboot or shut down my machine, (running Zorin 6 Ultimate) see a message displayed on the black back ground " Bytes could not be written......Broken pipe"?
2. #2 is: At the login/greeting screen where the user name is the screen is black for a couple of seconds before it turns to blue, once I type my password have no issue logging in.
Hope it is clear now?
I don't get stuck at the login / user name, password screen BUT it is black as stated for 2 seconds than turns blue.
The other is Broken pipe error on each reboot or shut down.
Hoping to hear from the Zorin team soon, kindly provide a solution since it's been 6 months plus & am getting tired of hit & trial clean reinstalls, which probably have done plus 30 time with updating.
Regards!

see here for "Broken Pipe", it has nothing to do with Zorin but it does have to do with "dpkg":

Hi,

#1: Update Manager > Settings > Updates > Pre released Updates & others cannot be checked, why any specific reason :o .....2 Canonical are unchecked too in Other Softwares... why were they left, as might check them too by default ;) , than how come I am running kernel .34 & madvinegar who has Ultimate edition too is still running .29, either there must be some way to tweak the kernels not to be updated automatically...... Wolfman's guide recommends to check all.......Wolfman, swarf, madvinegar can't one confiigure Software Sources, if yes kindly teach me?

#2: ALWAYS receive the messsage "genome-keyring-daemon" not responding" after a install?

#3: Ubuntu reboots instantly on the same machine, hardly giving any time to read vs Zorin Ultimate takes a while, again agreed that it's a 3.65 GiB vs 695 MiB, but never displays " Bytes cannot be written.....Broken Pipe" & similarly does not display a black screen that turns to blue or orange colored in Ubuntu's case?

#4: All of this on the same machine & with single OS at a time & not a dual boot of Zorin & Ubuntu.

#5: Have changed 100 plus downlocations/servers but always get that old 86 kb update error?

#6: Have installed updated mutiple times but the issues never get resolved?

#7: Zorin technical support doesn't even have a clue.

#8: madvinegar was the 1st to resolve my machine's WiFi issue, has a machine with pretty similar specs & is running Ultimate donno why isn't he intervening.....must be busy?

#7: Am being offered W8 in the same price of donation which I made for the Ultimate but am not taking it.

#8: You expert Linux geekers must be thinking that if I feel so bad about Zorin Ultimate should take a hike, but belive me in my 32 years of medicine still like to be criticized cause it further improves my med skills..

#9: Am or at least try to be a perfectionist & try never to give up, as in medicine.

#10: Like Zorin , am bored of windows & specailly the warm atmosphere in the forums.

# 11: Other forums would snub me if I talk about my Zorin issues, they would say & have said" you donated get assistance from them."

#12: It's good to be confident, vocal & bold, even after so many years in med if i don't understand apologize to the person & suggest getting some other's professional med advice.

#13: Do you think I like posting for the sake of posting.......NO......am facing issues that's why.....same is the case when a person travels10K miles to get a med advice........do you think he spent all that money etc to see me No again........he always has an issue & it's my job to find it.

Just my personal views, thought would share with you expert geekers.

Regards!

Chris.

PS: My friend Wolfman needs to edit his guide.

@madvinegar would request to help reslove these.

I have a Linux geek expert who is on a holiday to the fareast, my last resort would be to hire him to resolve before I throw the Zorin DVDs in trash & switch to stable Linux distro, never give up easily. 8-)

"PS: My friend Wolfman needs to edit his guide."

And which part do you suggest needs changing Chris, you are the only person that seems to have a problem with it, let me know what you think needs changing or improving, I am open to suggestions.

All things listed in the guide are what I have found works for me, if people don't want to follow my recommendations; that is up to them but until now; no-one has complained!!.

Hi there Wolfman, swarf & madvinegar,

Happy Thanks Giving to you & all the forum members.

Zorin team sent a link to download Ultimate 6.1 & hoping that the issues would get resolved. Downloaded, checked md5 burnt, installed & updated exactly as per your guide, rather more. ;)

1. Only updates were lesser, approx 144.1 MiB.

2. Still get that those 3 old errors: "genome-keyring-daemon not responding" "Could not write bytes: Broken pipe" & "that 86 kb update". Rest all seem to be ok, any ideas, solutions about broken pipe?

Hoping to hear from you expert Zorin geekers.

Regards.

Thanks swarf, they say it's a 32 bit in the email link.. :?

genome-keyring-daemon not responding is only but always displayed after complete installation before a restart, at times 1/2 or even 3 messages. As I mentioned to Wolfman once I never encrypt my home during install. That should give you some more idea.

1. Cannot get rid of these 3 errors which no one except me is getting....

2. I want to try installing using another method suggested by madvinegar....... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2113&p=8485&hilit=Plop+manager#p8485

3. Using this method have to burn the Zorin iso on the flash drive, boot with Boot manager CD & check usb?

4. Do I need to repartition & change it's file system......." Persistence (if available) – note that casper persistence will only work with fat16 or fat32 formatted drives."......what does that mean?

5. Apologize about the bother....my Linux geek friend is on a holiday......

Hoping to hear from you,

Regards.

My machine's Sony shipped DL DVD windows installs with out any issue, do the Zorin Team ship such DL DVD, by making an extra 5 Euro donation?

Hi there Zorin Team,

Could not post the screen shot on support site since it's max limit is 2084 bytes.

Here is a screen shot to show that the md5 check sum of the downlodaed 7zip is a correct match.

Now what do I do?

Regards.

It seems that your downloaded file was corrupted.
Please check the md5sum of your downloaded .7z file to make sure if it is not corrupted. The correct sum is: 47bc5eea7ac8767945b667853d6b4b27
If you get another sum please re-download the file with the latest version of Firefox without any third-party download managers.
To check the md5sum of the file in Windows please use the WinMD5Sum software from Nullriver: Download link
You can use the following program to check the md5sum in Linux distros (including Zorin OS and Ubuntu): http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/08/chec ... -gui-tool/

Best regards

Thanks swarf for replying.

My machine's BIOS has no usb boot option, only Internal optical, HDD, Floppy & Network.

I want to try performing a clean install using a usb flash, could you or madvinegar assist with your expertise on how to cutomize Plop boot manager.......... http://makegadgetswork.blogspot.com/201 ... s-not.html ?

Am leaving no stones unturned to get rid of this broken pipe error & plan trying another install this time using a usb flash, before totally quitting.

Btw which browser do you use?

How do I edit this for a usb boot for my Sony machine with no usb option.

Was able to copy the files - "plpbt.bin" and "plpcfgbt" and paste them in the boot folder.

Don't see ext Linux folder in boot?

Hi,

#1. After a install & reboot in recovery, when dkpg is run (with a cable connection) get a message after various proccesses that a 86 kb update is available. Do you want to install & below it is [yN] & [D]. Should I type y only OR yN. D stands for details?

#2. In Update Manager > Settings > Other Softwares should Canonical Partners & Canonical Source code that are unchecked should be left alone or checked?

#3. In Zorin Software again should the Source code be checked which by defaullt is unchecked?

Hi swarf,

Have a few questions:

1. For the 1st time in my life bought a Kingston 16 GB Flash drive. When inserted displays that it already has a FAT32 file system plus some other files.

How do I make it a bootable for Zorin, do I need to format it again & have FAT32?

Using UNetbootin, do I take an image of the Zorin DVD using k3b & place it on the desktop?

Read in one of the posts that you have mutiple bootable linux distros on your Flash drive.

#2: For BT dongle madvinegar in one of his posts suggested to Start > System Tools > Prefrences > Pesronal File sharing to check "Share public files over Blue tooth" & " receive files over Bluetooth" would like to hear your views?

#3: Still get the genome-keyring-daemon running but not responding after a clean install just before the 1st boot, any ideas why?

#4: At times after a install & during reboot see a few messages, most are OK except sound mixer Failed, why?

Hoping to hear from you,

Thanks.

Thanks swarf for your replies & answers about the browsers & search engines that you prefer.

About BT, madvinegar's views, BSOD.

genome-keyring-dameon message is seen only always after a new install.

Audio is strange, mostly I have after install & ocassionally have none, so follow Wolfman's guide/reply installing Medi repo & codecs for Pulse Audio.

Lastly how can I make a bootable usb flash of Zorin only.

Hi,

for TV, please see this guide:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1661&p=5820&hilit=kaffeine#p5820

and make sure you install the package "linux-firmware-nonfree" and "dvb-apps", DVB-T is the same as the American ATSC just a different name so don't let it confuse you!!.

Yes!, you can use Thunderbird for Yahoo mail etc.

I will let Swarf describe how you boot Zorin only from a flashdrive.

Don't know why G Chrome Spell isn't working as I don't use it.

Zorin Core and Ultimate only differ in the number of extra packages supplied with it, I have had no problems with Core or Ultimate that you describe.

Hi,

Preformed another install. Following are my observations, queries:

#1: This time had default audio & no problems like before?

#2: Before updating choose a server in Germany, in Settings > Software Sources > Updates Important, Recommended & Unsupported were already checked for a change vs earlier they couldn't be?

#3: This server installed kernel .34 vs .33?

#4: When the machine starts up the round circle moving below Zorin logo before the login screen stalls for a few seconds, is that normal, some kind of scanning before it starts to revolve smoothly?

#5: Is there some method to repair or unintall & reinstall G Chrome?

#6: Like windows is there some way to know which services start on boot up & can some be set to manual or disabled, asking because I don't use Vbox can it be set to manual on demand etc?

#1: It works, can send & receive files after pairing & checking the 2 options.

Thanks Swarf for the reply.

#1: Run Ubuntu Tweak that came with Zorin Ultimate 6.1.

#2: G Chrome doesn't play some on line streaming vids, displays an error, do I need to install Medibuntu repo & non free codecs for that or reinstall G Chrome?

#3: Swarf I know you dislike G Chrome or for that matter any Google products.

If I unintall G Chrome using Zorin web manager, do I install it via Synaptic manager or using another browser like FF from G Chrome's website, personally I find Chrome that comes with Zorin buggy?

#4: Is this gdebi package correct?

#5: Regarding using Beachbit just to confirm should only these 3 be unchecked, Free Disk space, Localizations & Memory,

#6: Which GTK3 themes from http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=167 would you suggest as an expert to be the most stable & nice looks, your personal choices?

#7: How do I update BleachBit since a newer version was found when I opened it?

#8: I am an old man hooked to G Chrome which you may not like, btw of the 2 FF & Opera which would you recommend besides G Chrome being the default, for Zorin OS?

Regards.

Swarf you must be thinking that am a senile fu_ _ _ _ _ pia, but trust me I like Zorin once have installed & learnt it on my Sony machine, plan donating generously & donate to purchase at least 50 Ultimate versions for the rigs in a charity hospital.

I never dual boot or run mutiple Linux distros on 1 machine.

This is my test /trail install to evaluate, learn how stable Zorin is, as people say.

My thoughts.

PS: Could you teach how this member juancarlospaco configured Clam AV in this Ubuntu thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2066436?

Hi there Swarf,

Till you take the time to reply to my previous 2 posts have a few questions:

#1: Which Conky should I install the one developed by madvinegar or the one by amsweitzer. My aim is to see System Monitor on the desktop?

#2: Can one cutomize desktop icons or they get changhed according to the theme?

#3: Unisntalled Chrome & reinstalled using FF from G Chrome' site but still get the spell checker error, probably it has glitches & bugs?

#4: You or madvinegar care to comment on the following, which am failing to understand?

If you follow the steps, you will be able to get the "Plop Boot Manager" as an option when your Grub appears at the time of booting.

Based on what you have put as content of your grub.cfg, you should be updating the menu entry for plop boot manager to:

*************************************
menuentry "Plop Boot Manager" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 112bb7de-0c4b-4120-9adc-2feb8b4570e5
linux16 /boot/plpbt.bin
}

*************************************
As a root user, you should paste this in the 40_custom file that will be located at  /etc/grub.d. Now since Zorin is based on ubuntu, if you enter the command "gksu nautilus  /etc/grub.d" into your terminal, it should open the location where 40_custom is as root.

Now you open this file, paste the above text between astrix, click save and close the file.

Then on terminal window type the command "sudo update-grub" and it should use this 40_custom file and update your grub.cfg file. In order to make sure, check if it is indeed the case.

Once confirmed, reboot.

From there you select Plop Boot Manager and then in plop boot manager you select boot from USB which then allows you to boot from USB.

Ok, so to make a bootable usb for any linux distro (zorin included) you will need to use a tool like unetbootin or [lili] linux live usb creator (http://www.linuxliveusb.com).if you are using windows liliis best though unetbootin is oldest.

Once you have created the live usb, follow above steps to enable your laptop to be able to boot from the live usb you have created.

you can copy paste the above using any text editor (gedit on ubuntu). Basically, you will first open 40_custom using the text editor and then paste and save.

Updating grub this way is the safest approach, it is completely reversible. Just delete the content in 40_custome, run update-grub and you are back. Though, IMO there is no need to revert. Having plop boot manager in grub menu is good for future use.

Hi there Swarf,

#1: At last was able to save .py file in text editor, saved it in /home & from there rt clicked, sent to desktop as shown in the shots * gave it executable privileges.

#2: Although like again you don't like Chrome but G Chrome hangout & desktop sharing helped, as my friend did it for me was running Mint at that time.

#3: He runs several Linux distros on different rigs but has no issue with G Chrome spell checker, though is not running Zorin? No one in the forum running Zorin uses G Chrome strange?

#4: At times the Z start menu icon becomes non responsive?

Thanks again.

G Chrome Spell Checker:

This person was running Linux Mint & using G Chrome & in Settings > Privacy > use a web service to help resolve spelling, was unchecked. But when I uncheck it doesn't help, any ideas, suggestions?

Btw it's a great tool to resolve issues like windows remote access........

Here's the links for good themes;

: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ ... ent=113264

: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/spice-up ... -cool.html

Note>> If you decide to install the Win2-7 theme. You have to install the theme whiile your logged in the Gnome Desktop only. It will not let you install while logged in to Zorin OS. Once you install the theme you can log back in Zorin OS and do your changes from >>> Gnome-Tweak <<<. All you have to do is unzip the tar.z file and look for the ( install.sh ) and and use it through the terminal.

Note>> When using these themes you get different results. So you have to play around a little to see what you get. I myself always get crazy things when applying the >>Icon's << in Gnome-Tweak Tool.
I usually look for Icon's from the net and manually apply/change them one by one from the icon's properties!!!! >> Example at the very bottom <<

Here's one of the popular >> Plymonth Themes >> (Space-Sunrise Plymouth Splash Theme)

Note >> This is a (deb) file that is installed through software center !!!

Hi,

#1: Since am a bit reluctant to use Bleachbit till Wolfman is back, used madvinegar's terminal command to clean up the 190 packages seen in Ubuntu tweak, is that fine
Code:
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get clean
?

#2: Can't find Zorin themes by moi?

#3: G Chrome+ hangout is an excellent tool in my opinion for an Linux expert to check for any issues, my thoughts.

#4: Have been using G Chrome for a while & personally prefer it over other browsers, don't understand why it's spell checker won't work on Zorin vs Ubuntu or Mint?

#5: @ Swarf what theme do you have on the last posted screen shot?

#6: Is it a normal phenomena in Linux distros that if many apps are running than shut & machine rebooted immediately to get the broken pipe error that I still occasionally see?

Thanks.

Chris if you like the Theme. You can always swap out the Ubuntu logo for Zorin logo/text .png. I thought of that today. Just have to make sort of transparent Z in place of the Ubuntu Logo. And use the ( Zorin OS 6 ) . I myself am not a graphics nut. I'm going to let my son get involved with that project.

Chris if you have the the Zorin OS Ultimate version, I would stick with it until the next release.
No matter whether you use Zorin OS or Ubuntu still the same ol thing.

Take a look at the >>>How to bring back Zorin OS 5.2 Desktop. I posted earlier this month.

Swarfendor has come up with a couple fixes for GnoMenu.

Good Morning>>>Good to see ya back.
If your using the Zorin 6.1 Edition. You shouldn't have to do anything major, as everything has been updated
Swarfendor can tell ya better exactly how to have the updates set up.
In the mean time you should be pretty much good to go other than a few settings.

Thanks Swarf for your very detailed expert reply, which I appreciate big time.

I have a few questions:

1. Are my Sony machine's specs good enough to run Zorin Ultimate 6.1, cause at times on system monitor see 500 MiB of memory being used of the 2 GiB & 50 kb of swap of the 5 GiB OR should I install it on my Dell XPS1730?

2. When shall that 86 kb update issue be fixed?

3. Will another install give me the same items in Update Manager > Settings > Other softwares.......like Opera stable that I have now?

4. Should the Settings of Update Manager be changhed or left as they are like source codes & Opera?

Thanks again & Hoping to hear from you,

Swarf have another thought/idea but that has it's own issues.

Install Ubuntu on Sony & Zorin on Dell, but who knows how compatible would Zorin be on Dell since that has a Nvidia graphic card & Intel Pro wireless, different hard wares.

Zorin is tried & tested several times on this Sony works fine only issue is may be the hardware isn't that good for Ultimate.

Btw madvinegar is running Ultimate on a similar HP machine but with 3 GiB of memory......... :? :? :?

1. Ubuntu even when using 600 MiB of memory never uses the swap vs Zorin starts to use it even with a lesser MiB of memory.........any reasons why, many proccessess run in the back ground of Zorin?

2. I had Pidgin, Skype ON & 3 tabs of G Chrome & was watching a movie using VLC only than Ubuntu used 25 kb of swap vs if I watch a movie like that on Zorin VLC crashes, any reasons why?

Hoping to hear from you,

Regards.

Chris it's always recommended to double what ever Ram you have on your machine.
If you have 2 GB of Ram>> Then your Swap would be 4 GB.
