Hi Swarf,
the simplest way to add an icon (W7 look) is to first launch the app and once the icon has appeared in the bottom panel; right click and "Pin application", you won't have to worry about commands, this may be a Gnome 3 problem as you cannot add icons to the Gnome 3 panels with the new desktop, as Z6 is based on G3, I can only assume that there is something blocking this!!. (I know you know how to pin icons but I thought I would explain for those that don't!!)
