actually. i was a bit desperate. so i have tried the steps already. broken packages bit didnt work. for the second bit however i edited the command line and typed nomodeset but it says that the command is unknown. I want to tell u that the when I press the tab key nothing happens. In my computer i have to use either the 'e' key to edit the command line or 'c' to change the command line-well i was not too sure about the difference in these two option- but i still tried both of these options and typed nomodeset but in both areas the command in unknown. well, i hope this isn't because of not plugging in the ethernet cable.
Please help me out bro, this problem is ruining my Zorin OS 6 experience.

Hi,

when you boot, you can try pressing the F6 key which should take you to the options menu where you can select "nomodeset", the other option is to boot into recovery mode and select "Safe Graphics" and then you can work from there, you will have a low resolution but thats okay to get you started.

When you boot in safe mode, you will most likely come up to a more or less blank screen, enter your username and then password, then you need to type "startx" which will take you to a graphical interface.

Then you should update the system:

Hope this helps.

thanks for replying bro. i want to tell you that i tried the first option but i can't seem to access nomodeset, well when i do press F6 i am prompted with a black screen with text and then it leads me to the login page and runs as normal, but then the problem still persists. Secondly, the Safe Graphics does not seem to work on my laptop as when i choose the safe graphics the resolution does not change despite the prompt of small windows which ask me to select graphics mode- where i selected low resolution as you advised me. well, after this i am brought to the log in screen- there is no black screen and i can only type in my username, password and not the startx bit. once am logged in though, the screen splits constantly and therefore i have to shutdown.
I also want to tell you though there are only some times when Zorin boots normally- for example i turn on my computer- boot Zorin OS- the screen splits bluish and blackish and it goes straight onto the login screen- then normal login and i can use zorin normally. However, then i decide to restart and then zorin os boots- no black or bluish splits-boots up properly with the zorin loading circle moving screen and the login screen appears and i can use the os as normal.

Well, i think this is a long and a bit confusing description. sorry, but can you help me out bro. Actually, i was thinking of reinstalling it for the second time and or downloading the 32bit version this time.

Hi abz,

you need to install the package "nvidia-current" which are the drivers for your graphics card.

The next time you boot without problem, go straight to the terminal and enter:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

let it do its thing then restart and let us know how it went.

Ideally; this would be best done at root level in the recovery menu but you said you don't have a network cable, it might be worth your while to get one for emergencies!!.

When you created the disk, did you burn the CD at the slowest possible speed?, if you didn't, you will get read/write errors.

thanx bro. i will try what you said. and i burned zorin on a CD RW. I used roxio to burn it to the cd with the speed: X2 and it took about 15-20 mins to burn it. do you think that is alright?

Hi,

For the latest Nvidia drivers ( version 304.37 as of 21.Aug.2012) please copy and paste the following commands one after the other in a terminal, press enter after each command is put in, you should only have to provide your password once: (to open a terminal; press Ctrl + Alt + t)

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Then restart your PC.

Hi abz,

well it is kind of normal, I have more or less the same on my Nvidia rig, the OS boots in various stages and basically it chops and changes between the Nvidia and Zorin Splash Screens!!.

As you have stated that you don't have any problems apart from that; I will mark this as solved if that is okay with you.

I just want to point out also that if you want to install 3rd party packages, they should be .deb packages only, I noticed you were trying to use RPM Seek!!.
