[SOLVED] Silverlight question

KarterJK

Sat Nov 17, 2012 5:32:57 pm

I don't think this is possible, but thought I would ask
As an avid Netflix type person, what I miss with a Linux setup, is the Silverlight plugins
is there a way to install Silverlight on a Linux machine?

I thought I would report back some results..

    1. I first installed the process via the link swarfendor437(you) provided.
    2. Using Firefox, I went to a web page that has a Silverlight video (a sample site i am designing)
    3. I thought it would just play, but to my surprse it informed me that I needed to install Sliverlight
HOWEVER when I clicked the install button the normal Microsoft Silverlight did not appear
but instead the new package (from Moonlight) popped up with its install window. Clicked on it and it did it's thing.
So, tried Firefox agan and SUCCESS it played great (all the functions worked, volumn, fast forward, CC viewing etc,
except it would not allow me to go into Full Screen Mode.
    4. I then tried Google's Chrome thinking it would work also, but, instead I had to install the plugin
seperately for it again, so it is not a System wide application.
after installing I tried it, and alas, the chrome browser would not work. (but hey, what could i expect)
    5. Next, I fired up my Firefox and off to http://www.Netflix.com I went, to try it out there,
      what a disappointment,
when I tried to play a video Netflix informed me that only Vista, Win 7, Mac OS 10+, or Chromebook OS could only be used
So, though it worked, but it didn't entirely work for my situation. Rest assured, I have every intention of contacting Netflix, and jabbing them in the ribs.

Thanks for your help

[Update] Just found Wolfman's install instructions and also noticed that moonlight specifies that it is only for Firefox.

Hi,

you might find this page of use but I am also having problems with it!. It never worked for me with Chrome!:

http://mono-project.com/DistroPackages/Ubuntu

Did you install the package "mono-complete" ??.

Each time FireFox updates, you have to re-install Moonlight but since the latest versions of FF; I cannot get it to work anymore!!.

Are you clicking on the correct package from the site, 32 or 64 bit??. Are you installing the Windows Codecs pack after install??. (Right click the open Silverlight/Moonlight screen and select to install codecs!!)

Yes, I have done it all and it doesent work. On Zorin5 worked only on Chrome - not on FF. On Zorin6 it doesent want to work on both. I can see on Zorin6 this loading anomation which consist of few flashing dots but nothing happens after that. I tracked it down to Totem Player...

Shall we wrap it up so that I (& others) can check step-by-step ?

Install "mono-complete", windows codecs, plugin for chrome and firefox, unblock silverlight movies in your browser settings (if you have flash-block extensions), right click on any silverlight movie and choose to install codecs.

- Have I missed anything ?

Unfortunately, I think Moonlight was created to give the illusion of cross-platform support on Microsloth's part. It's useless for any serious technologies. The key has to be making Silverlight work with Wine, but to do it without serious issues, it has to be done through a Windows version of Firefox.

The Wine-Compholio Edition is useful there. Apparently I can run Silverlight 5 on Wine, but integration with the latest Windows Firefox is somewhat lacking.

Hi all,

I just installed FireFox 20.0 and re-installed the moonlight plugin and it works again!!. (You must install the MS codecs pack too!!)
