[SOLVED] What's up with this video card?

Hi Guys,

I bit the bullet and bought a new PC :D

I've installed Zorin 6.1 64 bit, I like it :D

However the graphics card is a Radeon HD6670 and it's supposed to have 2GB of DDR3 RAM. When I set up a virtual machine on Virtualbox I see there is only 128mb available which doesn't seem right to me.

I did a $ lspci then the -v -s bit and this is what I get:

~$ lspci -v -s 01:00.0
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Turks [Radeon HD 6670] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: PC Partner Limited Device e198
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 44
Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at fdfc0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
I/O ports at ee00 [size=256]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fdf00000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci
Kernel modules: fglrx, radeon

In the additional drivers section I see that the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver is activated and currently in use.

Is something amiss?

My new system is:
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P AMD 760G mATX Socket AM3+ Dual Channel DDR3-1333 RAID VGA/DVI Dual Output Support
AMD Bulldozer FX 4100 QuadCore 3.6Ghz
Sapphire AMD 6670 2GB DDR3 Video card
8GB DDR3 Ram
1TB HDD

Hi,

do you have a 32 or 64 Bit version of Zorin installed??.

Have you fully updated?. (You know I will always ask that question!!)

Hi Wolfman,

64 bit and yes, fully updated. :D

Hi Swarfendor437,

Does that explain the low $ lspci -v -s 01:00.0 numbers? :?:

BTW my Swarm Assault game works without issue now, so I'm pretty happy about that :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I think that video memory can only go as high as 128mb in Virtual box, just to enable the guest OS to use 3D acceleration.
I have tested it in 3 computers (one of them has an i3, 4gb of Ram and ATI Radeon HD 5450 GPU) and 128mb is the limit in VB. And I have also enabled VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging.

I am not sure that something better can be achieved. An OS within Virtual Box cannot be expected to be used for powerful/GPU needy programs and applications.

If the OP can achieve something better, I would be interested to know how.

I'm pretty happy with what I have now so I'm not really worried about this. My system has been stable since I installed 6.1 as well :-)

Thanks for the suggestions.
