(Solved) Dell Wireless MiniCard

Rocketguy

Wed Dec 19, 2012 4:26:15 am

I am completely new to Zorin, and have run into an issue that it seems many before me have had. I cannot get Zorin to load the proper driver for my wireless card. I have Zorin dual-booted (Windows vista is the other.) on a Dell Inspiron 640m with a 1390 WLAN MiniCard. The driver on the Windows side is Broadcom 4.103.15.56. I do not have access to a hardwire connection so can someone please tell me if it is possible to download the proper driver or ndiswrapper (keep in mind I CANNOT CONNECT WITH THE SUBJECT LAPTOP TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING) on one computer and transfer via CD or USB drive?
Thanks for reading, and I hope that someone has an answer to my stupid question!

I noticed that last command returned that the Wifi was soft blocked. Just a little extra info, there is no hard switch, only the soft key. That still works in Windows, but not in Zorin.

Hi.
Hi. Your card is BCM 4311 and works with b43 module.

Plug the ethernet cable to get internet, open terminal and run the following two commands, the one after the other, and hitting <enter> after each command.
When you give the first command you will be asked for you password. Write it normally even if you don't see it typed. For security reasons the passowrd is not shown when typed.

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Reboot and see if it works.

Is there any way to do this from the Vista side and apply it to the Zorrin side? Or download from another computer and install from a flash drive? I do not have access to a hardline. Thanks.

Try this.
Boot to Vista. Click here
http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php? ... 1351500181 and a package will be downloaded (b43.zip). Copy/paste it to a USB thumb drive.
Then boot to zorin.
Open terminal and write
Code:
jockey-gtk

A window will open. Make sure to DESABLE the broadcom STA driver.
Then copy paste the package you downloaded from the thumbdrive to your desktop.
Right click it and select "extract here". A new file will be extracted.
Then open terminal and write the below commands, the one after the other.
Code:
sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/b43
sudo cp Desktop/b43/* /lib/firmware/b43
sudo rmmod -f b43
sudo rmmod -f ssb
sudo modprobe b43

Hopefully your wireless will spring to life.
