How to make AWN Weather applet work

I installed Zorin OS 6.2 Core a few days ago. I'm amazed at how compiz effects work beautifully without having to install Nvidia drivers. In fact, almost everything works very well except that the AWN weather applet. I've found that lots of people have had problems with it (network error message) and have tried some confusing and arcane ways to fix it, but nothing works.
It seems that because AWN is no longer maintained, nor the weather applet, I may be out of luck.
Does anyone know how to get it to work, and will Zorin be switching to CairoDock or something else soon (Like Fuduntu has)?

Thanks for the quick reply.
I may try that. Right now I've installed Screenlets and am using ClearWeather on the desktop. I used this about 4 years ago with Ubuntu. I'm not crazy about stuff on the desktop, but this isn't too bad.
So far, Zorin OS is quite nice. I've also been using Zorin OS Lite on a very old laptop and it's great!
