Is it safe to upgrade the kernel from 3.2 to 3.5 in Zorin OS 6.2 Core 64-bit?? Just wondering if any Zorin users have tried using kernel 3.5.

Hi,
I don't think that the 3.5 kernel is designed for Ubuntu 12.04, it should be used with Gnome 3.6 onwards I think!!. It may/may not crash your system!!.

Kernel 3.5 comes with ubuntu 12.04.2. So if you install 12.04.2 you will be getting kernel 3.5 by default.
Those you have installed ubuntu 12.04 (that came with kernel 3.2) will at some point upgrade automatically to kernel 3.5.
Zorin 6 is based (and follows) ubuntu's upgrades, so I would expect that you will upgrade to kernel 3.5 automatically at some point.
There is no any fear or problem to upgrade to kernel 3.5. Worst case scenario, you can just uninstall it and go back to your previous kernel.
I am planning to install kernel 3.9. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks Wolfman,
After reading the thread, I am wondering if it is worth upgrading to 3.5. I have not had the time to actually try this on my setup, but I'll keep you post on my results when I do attempt this.

I upgraded to 3.9 saucy. It was a little buggy, so I reverted back to 3.5.

Hi All:
I have 3.5.28 installed on my Zorin 6.0 and it doesn't boot but I then reboot into 3.2.041 and it works fine. More to the point, I uninstalled two 3.5 kernel versions, 3.5.24 and 3.5.26 (I think those are the numbers, but I'm not sure). I used Synaptic and it went fine. There was some discussion of removing kernels in an earlier post of mine that said do at your own risk, so I tried it (I figured I could always reinstall) and it was no problem. Hooray!. But then I selected, in Synaptic, kernel 3.5.28 and it said that the kernel and a bunch of other components had to be removed. That looked like it might be trouble, so I avoided that. Now I have a default boot to 3.5.28 but that doesn't work with Zorin 6.0, it doesn't boot but hangs in the middle of the boot process.
So I guess the answer I have is that 3.5.xx doesn't appear to work, and that you can remove readily earlier kernels except for the latest.
I hope that helps.
I also have one subquestion here. Do we need to keep the "extra kernels like 3.2.041 virtual and recovery. Recovery does provide some repair and check options that i used in 3.2.5 to no avail, so I can see that one, but what about the virtual kernel? It might be useful in VM but do we need it as part of our boot menu? Thanks.

Only use the 3.2 kernels in Zorin 6 and you should keep a couple of older kernels just in case, if you want the 3.5 kernels; install Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 and good luck with it because it is buggy as is Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 Alpha!.

Wolfman, Ubuntu 13.04 comes with kernel 3.9 (and indeed it is buggy for the moment).
Ubuntu 12.10 comes with kernel 3.5.
Also ubuntu 12.04.2 comes with kernel 3.5.
