(SOLVED) Recovery mode doesn't work

Hello all. If you know me, I am running Mint 13 (I ask questions here because of the professionalism of the people on this site). I also have a dual boot to Zorin 6. In Mint, I had an issue with the update manager. When I went to update, it gave me an untrusted source error concerning "libterm-readkey-perl error" In the terminal it had this "GPG error: http://dl.google.com stable Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG A040830F7FAC5991 Google, Inc. Linux Package Signing Key <linux-packages-keymaster@google.com>". I searched that error and used the solution on this page: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1305 ... led-heroku That seemed to fix my problem. Note: I did try the solution here of "sudo apt-get update" and sudo apt-get update-dist" first to no avail until I did the previous mentioned trick. I used those again and they worked. After the install, I noticed my teamviewer icon was gone from my internet menu. This and Google earth seem to disappear at random during some updates and I have to reinstall them. I keep the .deb files handy in my download folder. So, I did the normal reinstall using gdeb. During the install, I noticed it removed my google earth program. . No biggie, I thought. I'll reinstall it too. However, the installation failed with this error.
Setting up install-info (4.13a.dfsg.1-8ubuntu2) ...

I tried the updated teamviewer from their website. Same problem. I tried to reinstall google earth. Same thing. I then decided to try recovery mode. It is in the grub menu, and I have used it before. But it gave me an error claiming it didn't exist. Sorry, I didn't get the actual message. I can write it down if needed. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

firstly try changing your software sources download location (switch to a different download server) and refresh the software list in Synaptic once done and try updating agian.

You can also try running "DPKG" per this guide:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

Let us know how you get on.

I will try the source change. Currently, I am unable to run dpkg because I am unable to access recovery mode.

Hi,

another thought and I also say sorry because I told you to run DPKG which you can't because the recovery menu won't work!!.

Did you burn an ISO disk for your installation media and did you read this announcement!!??:

Let us know how you get on with the sources location change thingy.

This install is approaching it's 1 year mark. this was my first install, and I used an USB to do it. I switched the sources, but nothing seems to have changed. My synaptic isn't working either. :( I tried purging and reinstalling synaptic via terminal with no luck. If you notice, my system name is missing in the terminal. Copied directly from terminal:

Hi,

look here and the part about forcing an update first:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

Did you try running these commands in a terminal as well?:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

and:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

When you remove packages using the purge command, it can also take a shed load of things with it that you still need even though it tells you that you don't require them!, I advise you in the future just to use the "remove" command instead!!, an example:

sudo apt-get remove firefox

Let us know what happens.

The force command did the same thing. Error.
Here is the --configure -a command:

Hi,

try changing your software download sources again to a completely different source if "Main" didn't work for you, you can also try this which is a slight variation of the "-f" command, try it and see it it works:

sudo apt-get -f install

And also:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Let us know what happens.

Was reading on the net about other dpkg problems with a certain file. They moved the file to trash (not delete) and then ran apt-get remove install-info.postinst, then run apt-get install install-info.postinst to reinstall. Here is a link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ne-271118/ Would this be something to try? I may not have the commands correct. Feel free to help me on those, haha.

Hi,

I cannot put my finger on what is causing your problem, all I can suggest is that you do a fresh install and don't use the purge command ever again, never; never; never again!!.

Possibly someone else on the forum has an idea but I sadly don't!.

If you do re-install, you can keep your home intact by selecting the "Something Else" method when installing and you only select your root to be formatted but keep your home partition intact, you still have to set mount points for both partitions though!!.

Sorry I cannot be of more help!.

The thing is, this all happened before the purge command.

Hi,

there is one further trick you can try, open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories and take out all the ticks except those for Ubuntu and close the page, click on Reload/Refresh > Mark All Upgrade > Apply and try updating again and restart your PC afterwards.

It may work and don't forget to reactivate the repo's again!.

[url][/url]Found something!!!! Here:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1578263 Basically, you run this code:
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/install-info.postinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/install-info.postinst.bad
Then, update. It took, where before nothing worked! I have reinstalled teamviewer and google earth. Gdeb package intaller now works as does software manager! :D I will shut down and restart to see if there are any changes or quirks. Will also try recovery mode now. Will update in a few minutes...

Wellllllllllll..... No logging back in. Good thing I partitioned my HD for two OS's. :D You'll be proud. I'm running Zorin right now... When attempting a boot into Mint I get a crazy error and my keyboard flashes. Something to do with no init file and kernal going into panic mode. So.... I need to do a reinstall following your guidelines? :?

flyboy129

Wed Jun 12, 2013 10:58:06 pm

Okay. I did a root based reinstall. Pretty much everything I had setup in mint is as it was before the crash. I had to do a couple of recovery mode boots to get everything going right. Is there anything else I should check, or will all my settings be the same? Synaptic appears normal as does the software sources. Pretty much solved from my end. Thanks wolfman. I dunno if there is a karma thing when they say 60 blue jewels or not since if they can actually be added, I cannot see them. Anyway you deserve 60 blue jewels!

Hi,

good to hear, hopefully the Gremlins have left the building!!.

I will mark this as solved!. :D :D :D :D

Running "Dpkg" from the recovery menu is normally one sure way of getting back an unstable system from the brink, that is really all I can recommend for now!!.
