[SOLVED] PC to telephone other than Skype?

Uzi

Tue Jun 11, 2013 3:57:40 am

I live in the Philippines but hail from England. For years I have used Callserve which is now Vyke to call relatives on their landlines for a very low cost. It worked great

Now I have switched to Zorin & can only access my XP files not boot to windows I cant use it (Wine doesn't work) as there isn't a Linux version.

Anyone got any suggestions / recommendations? I checked here & all I found was a confusing post on Skype and needing 'crossover' ..??

Uzi.

Hi Uzi,

I have never used such a service but you can look here:

http://www.vyke.com/

They have PC software but whether Linux is supported??.

Hope it helps.

Hmmm....early in the day Wolfman? Not had your coffee yet

What you posted is what I said in my post, that Vyke doesn't work with Linux & I am looking for a Linux replacement.

How about google chat/voice?

Also, why you don't want to use Skype...?

Hi,

As best as I can tell Google Voice is only available in America. I haven't ruled out Skype, I just cant find simple instructions on using it with Zorin. Lots of talk about things I dont understand. Sounds complicated to set up.

Complicated...?

Just download the 12.04 multiarch version deb from here http://www.skype.com/el/download-skype/ ... -computer/
Double click it and it will be installed via the software center.

Then just create an acount and use it. You can also use your MSN account to login to skype (in case you have one).

Thanks

Hi,

look here at the first and 3rd posts relating to Skype:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2023&p=7875#p7875

Skype is also in the repo, (I think you have to set up the Medibuntu repo!) install via a terminal:

sudo apt-get install skype

I think the skype in the repos is not the latest version. This is why I said it is better to download it from the official site.

Guys,

At times I think you forget you are talking to members who are not yet up to speed with the tech speak & terminology used by Zorin / Linux. MV's instructions on downloading Skype were simple & clear (yet to follow them due to correcting a crash) but references to needing something called Medibuntu just means I have to find out what that is & what it does & how to use it before I get to what I need to know. This puts me off because I it is already 'sounding' complicated (probably isn't) & more involved than I want.

Thanks for the replies and I will look at Skype for sure.

You know I said it seemed complicated - hmmm :?

First I tried MV's route

Well it wouldn't download until I signed up to start with ...... oh wait Microsoft nuff said  Then I selected the 12.04 multiarch but it kept wanting to download ubuntu precise 4.2.0.11.1-i386.deb. So I downloaded it. Double clicked the download & it opened the Software Center but the reviews pretty much say its c*** & doesn't work. Put that on hold for now until I try Wolfmans version.

Using the Terminal just reported cant find Skype. So, ok look at what Medibuntu is. Went to here http://www.medibuntu.org/repository.php and followed the instructions. Skype STILL does not show up in the Software Center. Typed Wolfmans command into Terminal again, same result Unable to locate package Skype.

Like I said - complicated it seems

So, what to do? Use the package good old Microsoft has decided I should use?

Uzi.

EDIT - well after further reading, it seems that MV's package is the right one. So I followed these instructions https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12120/getting-started-with-skype-for-linux?intcmp=blogs-_-generic-click-_-skype-for-linux-4-2#2.1 which after 10 mins of Terminal code scrolling seemed to work......well except I have no idea where Skype is now,

2nd EDIT - well I double clicked as MV said, went to Software Center Install & that activated it somehow because seconds later I can now find Skype & open it. Now I need to test it.

Just for your info, the 12.04 ubuntu release is called "precise pangolin". So basically the "12.04" and the "precise" is the same thing.

You don't need to create an account just to download and install skype. You need to create an account afterwards so as to be able to use it. Unless (as I said) you already have an Windows Live Messenger acount, so you can login using these details instead.

Hope it works ok.

MV,

For whatever reason, the Skype website would not go to the download link until I signed up. No biggy that. I have Skype working with a credit paid for. So all I need to do now is make a call & see if it works ok.

Wolfman - yes mark this a solved.
