[SOLVED] 3g modem

still doesn't work, at least not automatically ..
I do all of the configuration stuff & the thing just sits there, flashing away.
- it never locks.

the fix is to use 'sakis3g'

this thing "throws the virtual_cd / modem switch".
& then it works, ok.

sometimes it doesn't even have to finish it's job, & the network is now available.

even 13.04 - is still 'not quite there' AKA zorin 7

First of all you need to advise the ID of the device. Is it a USB device? Please post the result of
lsusb

Also, for most of the times you don't need to use sakis3g. You just need to update the modeswitch program and lists.
See my sticky here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4077&p=19458&hilit=modeswitch#p19458

Then we plug our dongle and wait a few seconds to see if it works. Usually a window pops up asking for our password and then we proceed in the preparation of the mobile broadband connection via network manager.

I've never seen that .. & yeah, it's a usb modem

the best result, that I've got, is to use that 'sakis3g'
- stick it on the desktop, right_click / properties, make sure that 'enable run as program' is checked.
- click on it, select run. - it does it's thing.

do have to setup the mobile_broadband in the network connection tab.

Have you actually followed my guide to update your modeswitch to latest version 1.2.6?

YES

but when I did the 'apt-get install' bit - it failed - error unable to update package list.
so, I hooked up the wifi & ran that gain.
this time it D/Ld some files (!)

reboot, as per instruction, & version was 1.2.5 ( not 6 )
- the files were as per the instructions.

plug in a E3131 & up came the modem ( no sakis3g involved)
with the pre-setup broadband :D :D

Glad it worked.
I installed myself the 1.2.6 version, all went well, but indeed is keeps showing up like it is 1.2.5.
No worries. All works great as you have seen.

also have done this on another laptop, also using the same O/S

I have three huawei usb modems.

E160 - 3.6Mb/s
E169 - 7.2 Mb/s
E3131 - 21.6 Mb/s

the sakis3g could only get the first two to work.
- the hi speed E3131 is supported by this update,
which is great .. ..

More great news. Modeswitch does the job quite nicely.
