[SOLVED] Zorin Menu Blank

BigBlacks 22s

Wed Jun 26, 2013 2:43:06 pm

Hi everyone. I recently installed Zorin7 on a mini PC at work. Currently everything is working flawlessly besides the Zorin Menu. I have the button and icons and I am able to move the icons around, however, when I click the button it is blank where my programs are normally located.

At the bottom of the menu it says "No items matched your search crit..." with Back button just below that. I can click on all the system buttons on the right portion of the menu, I just can't use the search or show my applications on the left.

I tried killing Awn and have given the computer multiple reboots... I also tried switching themes and restarting Awn but that didn't work either. Any ideas on how to get my applications back and the search function working again? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

working on the assumption that you have an Nvidia graphics card, please see this link:

Let us know if it helps please.

Thanks for the replay Wolfman. I have an AMD video chipset. I am running on one of those Xi3 Mini Module computers.

I apologize that I can't take a screenshot right now. I restricted a lot of things and I'm currently working on my sudoers file for other users...

I finally got my screenshots to work so this is what I am seeing. (Disregard my search for Chrome... it does says the same thing when it's blank too.)

Hi,

you have an ATI graphics card that should be supported, open: Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Additional Drivers and see if it offers you anything and install it, the RECOMMENDED DRIVERS ONLY!.

Let us know how you get on.

I followed the steps you provided and it says:

* No proprietary drivers are in use.
* A proprietary driver has private code that Ubuntu developers can't review or improve. Security and other updates are dependent on the driver vendor.

The window does not show any other options but closing or switching tabs.

I thought I'd tell you this too. I found another thread where I follow these steps:

Right click the Zorin Button > Preferences > Click Ok > This restarts the Applet. However it shows the :( face and says "Whoops! The applet crashed. Click to restart it."

I click to restart and it's still show's itself as a blank menu.

Hi,

try the following:

Zorin menu > Prefrences > Prefrences > Use GTK Theme and see if that makes a difference.
Zorin Menu Settings_017.jpg

You may have an older graphics card which requires different drivers, you can try the drivers using the commands below one after the other but use at your own risk!!.

Alternative ATI Video Driver PPA installation (for ≥ 5000 and above series cards):

Code:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:andrikos/ppa

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-updates

Code:
sudo aticonfig --initial

I cannot say whether or not hese drivers will work for you and you may get error messages about not finding packages!!. If you get such messages, simply quit!!.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I was able to resolve the problem in a different way. I tried all those steps but none of them seemed to work.

I was installing Lotus Notes for work emails and I noticed that the Notes program made a lot of the system angry. After I removed anything Lotus Notes related, everything went back to normal. I have always disliked this email client... I think I'll just stick with Wine and load a Windows version of the program through that.

I appreciate the help! I definitely have learned a lot and I love using Zorin as an OS!
