Hello,

I'm happy to be a total new user of Zorin.

I live in Morocco and Internet connection is quite difficult.
I would like to:
- download some softwares from another computer/place as simple files,
- import them on a USB key at home,
- then only install them on my Zorin computer

Is this possible though the "normal" way is to directly download packages from the concerned system?

If yes, where can I find softwares ?

Thanks gratefully for your help.

Fatima.

Hi Fatima,

you can download single "deb" packages from here:

http://pkgs.org/

Make sure they correspond to the OS you are using. Ubuntu 12.04 = Zorin 6. Ubuntu 13.04 = Zorin 7 and that they also are the same as your PC, either 32 or 64 bit, the "all.deb" packages work on both, if you have an 64 bit PC and you cannot find a 64 bit package, you should be able to get away with using a 32 bit package. Use the single package installer app "gedbi" to install them!!.

That said, some packages that get updated might not run if dependent on other softwares being up to date such as the kernel! If Fatima is looking at system file updates that is a definite no-no, but perfectly ok for apps using gdebi - at least it will notify Fatima if the software is not compatible when she comes to install it!

Hi swarf,

this is the reason you should use "gdebi" as it solves the dependency problem in most cases!!, not always though!!.

typically those files are in /var/cache/apt/archives

- copy those to the same directory in the off_line PC.
- use synaptic to install them.
