[SOLVED]Plenty of Problems, Wireless and Slowness

First of all, hey!
So, i tried Zorin on my "HP Comaq 6715s" notebook, thinking it would be a lot faster witch zorin then with windows 7.

So, now since i installed it, its so slow, i got to wait like 10 seconds to open a folder. Wich is actually disapointing, but,
i think it must be somehow my fault.
Same with my wireless lan. It simply doesn't show the icon, or, any chance of activating it. I allredy tried looking through this forum,
But, some "linux unconfirmed driver" is activated in the additional drivers section, ethernet is working fine and, well, i didn't understand the rest.

So, i bet those are my faults, but, i'd appreciate all the help i could get c:
Thanks in before, Sebsa~

Oh, and, really sorry for my weak english ._.

Was it a proper installation or through wubi? What version of zorin did you install?

I can try to help you out with your wireless.
Open terminal (ctrl+alt+T) and post back here the result of the following commands

lspci -nn | grep 0280
lsusb
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all

From the results of the commands, I will see which card you have and what firmware you need.

So, thanks for the quick reply!

I installed Zorin OS 7 Core 6.4, or, thats the name of the .iso i've installed to some 32gig usb stick via lili ubs creator. It's 64bit if it matters.
In system settings -> Details it says ubuntu 13.04.

Here is the text of your commands:
Code:
sebastian@sebastian-laptop:~$ lspci -nn | grep 0280

To get your wireless working, plug an ethernet cable to get internet, then open terminal and write one after the other the following commands (pressing <enter> after each one):

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
sudo modprobe b43

You should see the blue light of your wireless spring to life.

Wow, thank you!
But, sadly somehow after entering the last command nothing happens, not even in the terminal.
Still not able to select something like "wifi" or "wlan" or anything else on the network icon ._.

But the blue light is shining bright c: Thank you so far, would still be awesome to get some way for wireless internet :P
Best regards, allready so thankfull !!

You should not receive any "reply" from the terminal after entering the last command.
The only thing that will happen is that your wireless firmware has been loaded and this is confirmed by the fact that your wifi blue light is signing bright.

After 1-2 minutes, you should be able to see the list of available wifis to connect to by clicking on the network icon on your panel bar. Can you please right-click on the network icon on your panel bar and make sure that the "enable wireless" in ticked?

Otherwise, can you please post again the results of the set of commands I gave you just to confirm that all is ok?

lspci -nn | grep 0280
lsusb
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all

Also this time, post the results of these commands as well:

iwconfig
ifconfig

So, hey agian, still amazed by your awesome support!

Can you please right-click on the network icon on your panel bar and make sure that the "enable wireless" in ticked?

The Problem here ist: There ist no "enable wireless", just "enable Networking", "Edit" and "VPN" in thick, "Ethernet Networking", "Auto Ethernet","disconnected" and "information" are grey. Thats all.

lspci -nn | grep 0280
lsusb
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all
gave out this:
Code:
sebastian@sebastian-laptop:~$ lspci -nn | grep 0280

Else to say is just that sadly nothing has changed and it's still pretty slow, yet, but because of your awesome support, i'm looking forward to use my old Laptop againg with some faster OS then Win7! Thank you guys so far, hope for more c:
Best regards!

Is the "enable networking" ticked?

Also unplug the Ethernet cable , restart and try again.

So, I just noticed that your wireless card, while is called "BCM4311", the ID of it is "4312".
"Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4312]"

This means that it may work if we load the wl driver.

Open terminal and give the following commands:

Code:
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo modprobe wl

Is your wifi working?
After the above commands, kindly post back here the results of the following commands to check the outcome:
Code:
sudo lshw -c network
sudo rfkill list all
iwconfig

sebsa

So, sadly nothing changed, yet.

Here is the outcome of the commands you wanted me to enter after:

Do you get any error after this command:

sudo modprobe wl

PS: Were you logged into the internet (via ethernet) when you gave the above commands?

sebsa

Fri Jul 05, 2013 6:20:02 pm

@ sudo modprobe wl -> it replys nothing, it does nothing, like, relly nothing D:

And yes, i was connteced via ethernet

madvinegar

Fri Jul 05, 2013 6:40:12 pm

It is like it is not loading the driver.

Could you please post the whole terminal outcome when you give the commands

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo modprobe wl

and then
