XSANE & simple scan

siawacsh

Sun Jul 07, 2013 6:23:12 pm

Can anyone help me with my scanner. I experiencing a lot instability these applications.

When run XSANE I keep getting no device available.

Simplescan say no devices available. I tried physically taking reconnecting the USB connection which causes the XSANE to detect the hardware. But it crashes during a scan resulting with the same error messages.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

make and model of scanner?, is the scanner lock on? and did you install the correct drivers?.

I may come across as a newbie, but I am not that bad...:)

The scanner is the Cannon Lide 200. The lock has never been on the off position. As for drivers, this scanner has never required a specific driver except Xsane and simple scan. To be fair, the only time this scanner has worked on Linuxwas with Ubuntu 12.04. So I am surprised that its behaving this way with Zorin 6.

It was fine since initial install six weeks ago. The whole system seems to have become buggy the past ten days.

Hi swarfvendor437, that link was'nt of much use. According to the documentation my scanner is fully supported by Xsane. He suggested this command

/proc/bus/usb/devices

Which resulted "No such file or directory"

The problem still presists. Here are some commands I ran. Keep in mind the scanner has worked on Zorin and Ubuntu 12.04 fine using both simplescan and Xsane. It is obviously switched on and unlocked.

Hi,

have you tried changing the USB port for a different one and scanning for devices again?, are you using a USB hub?. Try plugging it directly into to its own USB slot if you have a free one if it isn't already in its own slot!.

Wolfman, I should explain. None, of the above command indicating non detectoin is incorrect.
Whenever, I start simplescan it actually starts the scanner's arm. But when my scanner finishes one cycle
back and forth, it gives an error ("not scanner connected").

In the case of XSANE, it scans and displays the scanned document. But when I go to save it dims my screen and causes the system to freez for some minutes.
Then I get same message. "no scanner deteced".

Here is what I am now getting for USB

ls /dev/bus/usb
001 002 003 004 005 006 007 008
siawacsh@siawacsh-sager:~$

warfendor437, I checked my BIOS. There are no plub n play options.

This has become a critical issue with loads of scans tasks.

USB hub is disconnected. Scanner is connected directly to laptop motherboard.

The hub is out of the picture. Scanner connected to laptop motherboard. This definitely not a hardware issue.

Hi,

try running the following terminal command and restart your PC afterwards:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Are the "Proposed Updates" marked in your software sources updates list?.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

I have noticed that there are problems with Ubuntu in general of late and maybe an update might solve your problem!.

Just finished with the update. Made no difference to XSANE. Too bad to hear about the Ubuntu problems. I was getting comfortable with Zorin.

Hi,

is it possible that you can try the scanner on a different Linux PC so we can rule out whether or not it is just an Ubuntu/Zorin problem?.

Seems strange that it worked for a while and now doesn't, do you still have Windows and does it work correctly with that?.

Also; I found this for you:

Hi Wolfman, unfortunately I do not have access to another Linux machine. I tried your last link

http://askubuntu.com/questions/33126/ge ... 00-to-work

It got the scanner to scan, but as soon as I tried the save the document the application crashed and my system froze. It stopped working since then. There is little doubt in my mind that this is a software issue.

I have decided to back my data wipe the my hard drive to try another a reinstall. I still think I should go for Ultimate version 6 as opposed to 7. Do you agree?

Thanks

Hi siawacsh,

I would go for Zorin 7 as it has advanced kernel support and it may well be a software issue as you say and the chances are it will work with the later higher kernels!!.

One thing to bear in mind is that Z7 is only supported until Jan 2014 and you would have to do a release upgrade!, try with the free version first and see if you have any luck!.

You can save your data from a previous install if you follow this guide but you will still have to install all your prefered apps though!:

Hi, I have been spending the past week or so experimenting with different distros. It seems Mint works my Cannon scanner right out of the box. But I simply could not live with the other aspects such as it could see my external usb sound card, it simply could activate it. I installed Zorin 6 Ultimate and it worked with simplescan but over time it went back to being unstable. Same for Xsane.

I paid for for Zorin 7 Ultimate but lost the email download link during the re install process. Can you send me another link for Zorin 7 Ultimate?

Thanks

Hi!
I've got fast the same trouble but as far as I'm concerned Canon F5600 is written to be supported by X-Sane... it recognize the scaner but it refuse to numerize the doc... and when I write the command : scanimage -L, I've got the answer that confirms "device `genesys:libusb:001:003' is a Canon 5600F flatbed scanner"

For future reference can you start a new thread? I have discovered that there is an issue with Zorin 9, and agree it should work - I trialled Deepin 15.1 recently and 'simple-scan' with my all-in-on Canon MG7550 worked out of the box. To get the scanner working in Zorin I used the GNU/Linux drivers supplied from Canon Website:
