Tried loading Google Earth (googleearth) from Software Centre, which could not find it, and Synaptic, with the ammended spelling & it appeared to load it in o.k. - Trouble is, it is nowhere to be found. - This was also happening in Mint 15. -- It's a 'Must Have'.

Hi,

download it directly from Google Earth, all you have installed is the Google Earth package maker not the app itself:

http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/index.html

Make sure you download the correct package for your system, either 32 or 64 bit deb package!!.

Thanks, did all that then realised I would have to install 'Gdebi' again. After this, it loaded the software o.k. & installed it in 'Internet', however, when it starts it is only there briefly, then crashes. It certainly was 64 bit deb package - Any ideas?

Hi,

is your system fully up-to-date and did you use "Gdebi" to install it as there are normally a lot of dependencies to install which works well after installing with Gdebi!.

What graphics card do you have and have you installed the drivers for it??.

Not sure what graphics driver is in use. - Other distros have had a Dvice Manager that looks & makes a suggestion but looking at Synaptic, I would not have a clue what to get. I think the last distro had me using 308.44, with updates as well. At present I am not sure, but Googleearth sure is sluggish. - Also, not sure how to use gdebi to set up PPA's. Does this do 'the lot'?

Hi,

open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Additional Drivers for Zorin 7. (For Zorin 6: System Settings > Hardware > Additional Drivers) and see if your drivers are listed and install them, restart and do an update again using the terminal command:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

DO NOT FORGET TO UPDATE!!!!.

Synaptic claims I am using X.ORG X Server, Nouveau Display & states this device using an alternative driver. --304 is laisted, as are updates for it, as well as 173 (proprietry) which have worked ok in the past.
When I clicked on 304 & tries to use it, the system came up with error & wanted to report it.The instal (or similar) button disappeared.Bithing seemed t be happening, so closed it. On re-opening it states no proprietry drivers in use, so will try the re-start then update.

Did that and got this: Ign http://us.archive.ubuntu.com raring-updates/multiverse Translation-en_US

It is still using that 'Nouveau' driver.--Not sure how good that is.--Google Earth still glitchy and then crashes.
I also notice that under Synaptic-Settings-updates, that the Updates page has everthing de-ticked. --Rgds.

Googleearth still crashes-all the time now. - I suspect that driver simply does not suit & would like to try the 173 again. It has worked in the past with this graphics card. Just not sure how to get it. - Trien on that page but it was taking forever so gave it away.

Have done another full recovery reboot etc. Google Earth works, but slow & staccato. On checking Synaptic I notice that 'nouveau' driver, which is open source is still being used. - Wish I could get something better than this.- Also, none of the small links to photographs work.

Also, can not find where to obtain & install Skype.

Rgds.

Hi,

for Nvidia drivers you can use the PPA's from this link and you must update immediately after installing the drivers:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2490

For Skype you need to first install the medibuntu repo:

http://www.Medibuntu.org/repository.php

Please see the post install guide too:

Hope it helps.

Google earth version 7.1 is full of problems. (version 7.1 is the one you download from the official site...). I had the same problems (crashes at startup etc).

version 7.0 is great. I have uplodaded version 7.0 on my ubuntu one.

First uninstall completely version 7.1 and then choose one of the links below.

for 64 bit

for 32 bit

Wonderful, but having obtained Google Earth via an external site, I seem to have trouble un-installing it. - I found the packages listed in Synaptic, did a complete removal, but G.E. still runs (sluggishly). - Any ideas. - Getting v 7 sounds a great idea. - 7.1 maybe released with bugs.

Hi,

forgot to mention that "Gdebi" is not for use installing PPA's!!. It is a single package installer only!.

Your other thread about removing Google Earth has also new posts!.

Have hit the wall on this one. - Got so desperate I even tried a 32 bit version. When I found it was no good and Terminal could not un-install it, I did a full O.S. re-install. - That got rid of it.Thank god for all your help so far. - I simply referred back to the Forum Q & A's when required. - These items are good to refer back to as 'refreshers' periodically. - I was almost keen on doing the re-install from a USB drive, but it was too much reading & I had the DVD handy.
The printer this time was simple. I simply made that Terminal entry you suggested, then got the files from Synaptic. - Anything of 'lpr' variety except for the 94 & 9420, + a couple of cups wrapper files for good measure. 8 or 9 in total and all small. Then clicked 'add printer' and there it was. The system found it, so that original terminal file sure needs to be there in all versions of the distro. Something like it seems to be in Mint. - Pity they can't get a few more things right. ---So, my only probs now are to get a working version of G-Earth, and find how to install a suitable theme for window borders. - Everything else is back in & working, Thank You.

Hi,

glad to hear it.

Have you installed your Nvidia drivers this time around?.

If you download Google earth from their website and install the 64 bit version (I assume you have a 64 bit version of Zorin!), you can use Gdebi to install it and you should have it up and running assuming you have also done all the system updates.

Just checked in Synaptic. It claims I am using X.orgX server-Nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open source)....
Not sure is this is any good, or how well it really suits my now aging graphics card. It must now be 6 years old, where everything else is new. -- -Regards.
