[SOLVED] Lost windows decorations - compiz malfunction?

I've gotten an error message the compiz has crashed. Restarting my laptop has not gotten it back running normally. I have used the synaptic gui to reinstall compiz, but have not fixed the problem. I tried to reapply the window 7 look using the zorin look changer application but that has not had any effect.

Please tell me what steps I can take to get zorin sessions running normally with compiz and windows decorations.

I'm pretty sure, but not certain I'm running Zorin 6. cat /etc/lsb-release gives me DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS".

Logging out of a Zorin session and logging into a Zorin fallback session, as shown below, gives me my previous windows decorations. I am also able to move windows around on the screen without the windows redrawing slowly as I move them. I do not have any desktop items in the background in my Zorin session. There is also no black bar on the bottom of the screen that seems to mark an incorrect edge.

Thank you.

I had compiz-config in my preferences. Removing windows decorations, rebooting, then re-adding them has not worked.

Is there a set of commands I can issue from a terminal to determine if compiz is even running, or a log that will indicate if something related to compiz or graphic is crashing on startup?

Thanks

Hi,

if you have an Nvidia card, first check this out:

You should also run "DPKG" per this guide:

A NETWORK CABLE IS REQUIRED FOR THE ABOVE!.

See also the Compiz troubleshooting guide:

Hopefully this is not an unsatisfying answer.

The first command from the compiz troubleshooting page:

Code:
compiz --replace ccp & emerald --replace &

Looks like it reset compiz without me having to find and submit any error output or make any further changes. After rebooting my laptop, all is well now. I think that is the line that did it.

Thanks a lot for all of the help.
