(SOLVED)The internet disconnects automatically after minutes

Hi every one,
i installed 2 OS in my laptop Lenovo thinkpad Edge 125: Windows XP and ZorinOS. When I boot to Windows XP, the internet works as normal but when I restart my laptop and boot to ZorinOs, the internet disconnects automatically after some minutes. If i want to access the internet, I must un-plug in the internet cable then re-plug in. But after some minutes, the internet disconnects again. I must re-plug in over and over. I used to install Lubuntu on this laptop and the problem is the same.
Please help me.
Thank a lot :)

Hi Mickey,

try running "DPKG" per this guide which will fully update your system:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2247

A network cable is required for the above!.

This may solve your problem. Madvinegar is the network expert and I am sure he will have a question or two for you.

Regards Wolfman :D

thanks wolfman. I entered the safe mode and ran the DPKG and the system updated many things. when it connect to the deb.opera.com it paused when reached the 97%: 97% (Connecting to deb.opera.com (195.189.143.183) then the connection is timeout. So the update was not all successful. I tried to re-ran the DPKG again and again but it always stopped at 97%. I also run sudo apt-get update then the problem is exactly the same. No matter I run on the Live CD or the installed OS on the disk, the internet connection still auto-disconnect after some minutes (5 or 10 minutes). I'm exhausted when re-plugging in the cable over and over again :(.

Zorin's market is predominantly US and its update server is set to a US one - try changing to 'Main Server' in Update Settings or alternatively, one nearer to where you are! :D

I changed the update server and the system updated and upgraded successfully. But the internet connection still disconnect after some minutes. I must to re-plugin the internet cable to make it connect again. it's so exhausted when i have to re-plugin over and over. :(

Can you please post the outcome of
Code:
lspci -nn
sudo lshw -c network

Also, after the problem occurs (i.e. when you get the disconnection) open terminal and write
Code:
dmesg

Post back the results here.

I have found that there is a bug which is still unsolved regarding your ethernet card ID (1969:1083) that causes exactly what you describe i.e. connection drops.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1176370

As you will read, this bug appeared in kernels later than 3.5. They advise that it used to work just fine in earlier editions i.e. in kernel 3.2 of ubuntu 12.04.
A workaround is to unload completely the wireless driver but I don't know if this is an option for you.

To summarize, you have the following options:

1) You install zorin6.0 (NOT 6.1 or 6.2) which is based on ubuntu 12.04 and has the 3.2 kernel. Just to be sure you can create a live USB of zorin6.0 and test if your ethernet connection works fine. Don't forget that Zorin6.0 is an LTS release that will be supported till 2017. When your bug is fixed, you can install a later release/later kernel.

or

2) You keep your current installation which I suppose is Zorin7 (based on kernel 3.8 and ubuntu 13.04) but you unload your wireless driver (in your case rtl8192ce).
To test if this works, open terminal and write:
Code:
sudo modprobe -r rtl8192ce

(or even turn off your wireless by using the physical switch or button - if you have one).
Use your ethernet to surf the web to see if all works ok without connection drops.

metylbk wrote:thanks wolfman.

Hi,

if the Opera PPA is causing a problem with updating, you can disable it by opening Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Other Software and take out the tick for the Opera PPA and try updating whilst you still have Synaptic open!, click on > Reload > Mark All Upgrades > Apply and restart your PC once done, make sure that in the repository window "Updates" that all the boxes have a tick including "Pre-released Updates".

@madvinegar: you saved my life time. thank you so much. I installed zorin OS 6 and the problem disappeared. i love ZorinOS GUI because it's similar to window 7 so i get more familiar than other Ubuntu versions.
