Missing Printer

Acer DeVille

Wed Dec 04, 2013 12:37:08 am

This may get complicated, I'll try to be as clear as possible. I have a HP DeskJet 1051 all-in one printer. I did have it plugged straight into a pc, if it sat without being used for a day or two it would disappear from the hardware list. I would have to unplug the usb for a short time then plug it back in so it would be recognized again. I've had other printers that did the same thing, so it's not anything unusual. However now I have installed a networking wireless router with usb ports so you can network printers and whatever. I hooked it all up last night, and even printed with it, no problem. Now this morning it has disappeared, I did get up and go back to where it is and unplugged it for about 10 seconds plugged it back in with no luck. Last night I got the router up and going, then plugged the printer in, and my computer immediately picked up the printer. I'm thinking I'm going to have to get the IP address, or system location address, and put that in as a static printer, I'm guessing. Problem is I've got to get it recognized first so I can write down the address, that it shows.

How do I get it recognized again, then make sure it stays recognized across all of the computers in the house?

Hi,

install the package "hplip-gui" which will give you the full HPToolbox GUI:

Code:
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

Open the app "HPLIP-Toolbox" which you will find under Systems Tools > Preferences and start the app, it will guide you though the set-up process, there are a couple of similar icons so watch out for that!!.

See the printer section in the post install guide too:

Quite a while ago I rebuilt someone's machine which had XP on it and the only way to install the wireless HP all-in-one was to first connect it via usb and assign it an IP address (can't remember now if the HP software actually provides this when it reads the printer's MAC (Machine Access Code) address - then just enter manually what is presented to you).

Hi sorry again, I keep getting tied up with other things. One problem I've had this time is I ended up having to reinstall the OS. I was trying to add some programs related to printing, and network through Synaptic, and for some reason, it ended up uninstalling several vital programs from the OS, don't ask, I have no idea.

Now that I reinstalled, and updated my system to 7, I was able to install all the latest hplip and cups, etc... I plugged the printer straight into the computer, found the printer, and installed it. Then unplugged the printer, and plugged it back into the usb port on the router. Started hplip, opened the webapp for cups localhost:631, found the printer, installed the printer, tried to print a test page, and got the error msg "Printer not responding", and "Device Communication Error". I don't think the printer is going to have an IP address, since it is a USB device and not a "network" item. After checking the address is hp:/usb/Deskjet_1050_j410_series?serial=XXXXXXXXXXX.

Sudo hp-setup does not find the printer, sudo hp-check -r shows a few missing items, that I can not find in synaptic, then it finds the printer, even shows the printer serial number but then says, can not communicate with printer. How does it find printer, gets printer information, including serial number then say it can't communicate, it just communicated. Then I run hp-doctor, it runs for a minute, shows a couple of missing items, then ask for root username and password. Of course I don't have the root username/password, because ubuntu does not use root. HP device manager finds it, system settings>printers finds it, and gets all information from it. HpLIP tool box, says it needs updating, so I go through the steps to update, through the terminal. It runs for about 5 minutes, then finishes. So I go back and check, tool box still says it needs updating.

This printer is about to get on my nerves, I really need it where it is, so that everyone can use it, instead of having to take the laptop to where the printer is plugged in the wall, because that's the only spot I have to put it. Luckly the Router is right next to the printer, so plugging into the usb on the router is the best set up I could hope for. I just don't understand what is wrong. I've done every troubleshooting, and install procedure that I can find, and all I manage is to see it, but not print from it. If you plug it straight into the laptop, it prints perfectly, just not on the network. I need to mention the router, has two usb ports, we have a WD external hard drive plugged in the second port, everyone can see and interact with the files inside the external harddrive, but not the printer. I have attached the output of several terminal commands. There is a lot of information here, and I'm sorry it's so much, but I wanted to give as much as possible so that maybe someone could spot something that needs fixed. Thanks guys for taking the time to help me.

Hi,

boot the PC with the printer plugged in to a USB port and start HPLip-Toolbox, if your printer isn't listed and it won't run the setup program, close HPLip-Toolbox and unplug the printer, plug the printer back in the same USB port and start HPLip-Toolbox again and if necessary; run setup by clicking on "Device > Setup Device and just keep on clicking forward.

Let us know if this helps.

Hi Wolfman, I've already done that. That was the first thing I did. I knew I would have to have the printer installed on the pc before it would recognize it on the router/network. It installed correctly and would print. But when I changed it over to the router usb, the local printer install was automatically disconnected since it was no longer attached to the pc, and still won't install. If I plug it back into the pc, it's there and will print. I really need this printer to work with the router, for several reasons. I know it will, I just have to find the right combination of settings. Last night I did find an obscure software from Belkin (the router brand), it was a USB Driver, but it is only available for windows and mac. I installed it on my windows 7 partition, and the printer finally works wit windows. But I can not get wine to install it. I starts to unzip it, and then just says "setup can not complete", and quits. So I'm not sure where to go from here.

Edit: I need to add that I have a usb external hard drive connected to the router, and it works perfect, I also tried plugging in an external dvd drive to the router, and it just automatically worked, it's just the d*** printer that won't work. So I know it has something to do with the printer and not the router software.

Hi AD,

try taking a look at the HP support pages which might help:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/184

Apart from what I have already told you; I don't really know what else to suggest!.

Are you trying to set up the printer eventually as a wireless printer?.

Here are the manual instructions which might help!.

Wolfman wrote:Are you trying to set up the printer eventually as a wireless printer?.

Well, yes technically it would be wireless. The printer is running off a usb port on the wireless router. So we connect to the router wirelessly, then the router connects to the printer by usb.

Well, thanks for your help, do appreciate it. It's supposed to work, all the hplip documentation I've read says the printer is supported, so I'm just missing something stupid.

Hi AD,

you know tht the printer MUST be connected with a cable (USB and a network cable) BEFORE you set it up as a wireless unit don't you?.

Yes, I have had it plugged into the computer, and set up the printer in both system>printers, and in hplip. I also printed a test page to make sure it was working properly. Then I plug it into the router, hplip sees it, but will not connect with it. Hplip, shows the location of the printer, the model of the printer, and the serial number of the printer, but will not print. I know it's communicating with the printer, because it has the serial number, so why won't it print? This is getting frustrating, because everything I do says it should print, but it won't.

Hi AD,

have you setup the WiFi security password with the printer?. You can only do this by first using a network cable!.

Well, I think I figured out the problem, now I just need to figure out how to fix it. Printing out the test page on the printer, while plugged into the computer, the printer returns an address of: URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_1050_j410_series?serial=XXXXXXXXXX

So the computer is looking for an IP like 192.168.192.1, and that's not what it should be looking for.

Hi AD,

the IP address 192.168.192.1 would be that of your router and not that of the printer!.

Yes that is actually the router's IP, but I was just putting it up there as an example of what the computer is looking for. Now I just have to find someone that knows how to change one or the other. I have confidence in you, you've never let me down before.

Hi AD,

I found this, it seems straightforward enough!:

This might help too:

As for letting you down, well I don't have all the answers myself and often must search the web to come up with an answer to a problem, I am not always successful though!.

Yes, but you know more than I do, and have a better idea of what search terms to use, than I do. I do appreciate your help, you rock.
