Deleted files and need to recover

Hi all,

I'm in a bit of a panic at the moment, I've deleted some files that I badly need to recover.

I've just started using linux, about 3 days, so I'm a complete novice. I copied some files (belonging to the wife) from a usb to my hdd so I could format the usb, I then accidentally moved the files to the trash and deleted them.

I've download "foremost" and entered the following into terminal "sudo foremost -T all -i /dev/sda1". For the past 30 minutes this message has been on the screen

"Processing: stdin"

Is this searching through my hdd for any deleted files or is it simply doing nothing? Are there any other commands I should be trying?

Is there any other program that I can try?

If I can't recover these files before the wife finds out, the turkey won't be the only one with it's bits cut off and stuffed inside them this week!

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your help mate, that was a great guide.

I've now located the files and copied them to a folder but I need to have root access so I can change permissions (change to 755 I think?) to recover them, according to this below.

When finished press "q" repeatedly until the normal terminal is seen. The folder "Xaiml_Dataset" can only be accessed by the root. To fix this, use root privileges to change the folder permissions and the contained files. After that, the files have been recovered and accessible to the user.

I've been busy googling how to get permission to root access but on every thread people are warning against it if you don't know what you're doing (thats me) I would appreciate it if someone could explain what command line to use and how they arrived at that command if possible please.

I have copied the files to Desktop/Loststuff

Hi,

open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and then enter:

Code:
gksudo nautilus

and this will give you root privileges as long as you don't close your home folder, if you do close it, just re-enter the command in a terminal again to regain root privileges.
