I followed this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/116157/how-do-i-install-a-scanner-driver-for-a-brother-mfc-7420 but I still cannot scan with my Brother MFC-7420 all in one. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

I've also tried this http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/11337. The Brother is now listed as a scanner, but I'm unable to connect. The error I get when running XSane is "Failed to open device 'brother2:bus5;dev1': Invalid argument."

Have you checked out this page first? Pre requirements:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... e.html#101

(Scroll down to pre-required procedure (2) )

Then go to brscan2 models section of this page:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... d_scn.html

Then go back to this page:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... _scn3.html

for detailed instructions.

Please be sure you download the correct version of the driver for your system - you haven't made it clear whether it is Zorin 32-bit or 64-bit! :D

For the printing bit, follow this guide here:

I have Zorin 7 64-bit.

I think I have all the files installed, but I'm not sure this is working:

Pre-required Procedure (2)
Related distributions
Ubuntu8.04 or greater
Related products/drivers
cupswrapper printer/PC-FAX drivers
Requirement
1. "sudo aa-complain cupsd" command is required before the installation.
2. "sudo mkdir /usr/share/cups/model" command (as it is) is required before the installation.

Can you walk me through it?

Hi,

open Synaptic and type "brother" in search and install all the packages it shows then restart and setup your printer via System Settings.

Let us know if it helps.

I downloaded all "brother" files, but there was no change.

1. "sudo aa-complain cupsd" command is required before the installation = command not found.

I already had the printer working using a different brother printer driver (9600 per another thread I found), but now I'm trying to use the scanner.

Hi, have you installed CUPS at all? I think you may need to do that first (could be wrong) before issuing those commands - see the link to the last website I gave in my response - it tells you how to install CUPS - needed for printing.

I can access CUPS from http://localhost:631/, but still unable to run "sudo aa-complain cupsd".

Hi,

I have just noticed you are using Zorin 7, you should update to ver 8 as it may be better supported, Zorin 7 is no longer supported!.

http://zorin-os.com/free8.html

If you prefer ver 6:

http://zorin-os.com/free6.html

Which is supported until April 2017:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I don't have a Brother printer so it is a bit difficult me to advise you further but with the newer kernels in ver 8, you might stand a better chance of getting it to work correctly!.

I tried it all again, and I needed to move

# Brother
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Down a line

LABEL="libsane_scsi_rules_end"

ENV{libsane_matched}=="yes", RUN+="/bin/setfacl -m g:scanner:rw $env{DEVNAME}"
# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
LABEL="libsane_rules_end"

The printer works and the scanner works in simple scanner, but not in Xsane... Thank you both for your help! I didn't realize Zorin 8 was out of beta testing.

I installed all the "brother" files from the download manager then followed this thread http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/11337

Now, both the printer and the scanner are working in Zorin 8, thank you! Zorin 8 is a little faster I see ;)
