[SOLVED] unable to install Brother DCP-145c printer/scanner

Hi,

I tried installing the official drivers from the Brother website following the installation instructions. Despite I had to solve by myself a problem not reported in the instructions (the /var/spool/lpd directory did not exist) I think the drivers are installed correctly.
However I'm not able to print/scan yet.

The printer is visible in the printers list since I added it before installing the official drivers. Of course, adding the new printer did not allow me to print/scan either.

What else should I do?
Thanks,
regards

Hi,

open Synaptic and type "brother" in search and see what is installed, there are several packages which you might want to install, they don't take up much space!.
Synaptic Package Manager _002.jpeg

Let us know if this helps.

Unfortunately it did not help.
I've been "manually" checking the description of some of those packages, I've also been using the "search" tool in Synaptic but none seem to be suitable for my DCP-145c. In fact, searching for DCP-145 now just gives me as result the dcp145ccupswrapper:i386 and dcp145clpr:i386 drivers installed through the official Brother website.

So, what else should I do?
Thanks so much for your replies.

Hi,

go here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s ... ion/190331

and look near the bottom for the name actionparsnip and click on the two links he provided, download both files then open them with Gdebi or Ubuntu Software Center.

The above link is old but might work!.

If you have a 64 bit version of Zorin installed, make sure you install this 32 bit support package first via a terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs-multiarch:i386

Let us know if it helps.

At the moment, I solved the scanning problems: actually I did not installed the scanner drivers. For all of those willing to install the scanner drivers do not forget tho also install the package required for the scanner to be used also by normal users (which is what you may surely want), just following the Setting for normal users (Required for USB Connection) as reported here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1.html

Back to the printer, I followed the instructions you suggested to me through that link and actually it worked! Thanks a lot!

Actually i thought I just did similar things: download the drivers and install them. What he suggested to do is:
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dl ... .i386.deb;
sudo dpkg -i ./dcp145clpr-1.1.2-2.i386.deb;
rm ./dcp145clpr-1.1.2-2.i386.deb;
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dl ... .i386.deb;
sudo dpkg -i ./dcp145ccupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.deb;
rm ./dcp145ccupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.deb;
sudo apt-get -f install

That is: download and install the drivers, remove the .deb packages and run "sudo apt-get -f install". What I did was downloading the drivers through firefox (and not through wget), then install the drivers through gdebi (and not through dpkg) and also I did not run the final command "sudo apt-get -f install". So, can anyone tell me why his instructions worked and mine not? I mean, what's wrong with my procedure or why it is different from what he did? I'm quite sure the difference is not between downloading with firefox vs wget. Maybe the difference is in dpkg and gdebi. Did "sudo apt-get -f install" also affected?

Thank you so much.
Regards.

Thanks

Hi,

"wget" will only install the main part of a package and Gdebi also installs the dependencies!.

Have marked as solved.

Maybe you meant "dpkg" (not "wget", since wget just downloads files... not installing them).
In this case, I still do not understand why it did not worked with Gdebi while it worked with dpkg.
Any explanation?

Thanks,

Hi,

you are right; I did mean dpkg!, see the links below for more info on APT/DPKG etc:

Not sure about what should I do with the above link. Why is it important in order to reply to my questions about why my procedure did not work while the procedure of actionparsnip did work?

Wolfman wrote:https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGet/Howto

After reading the above link, which actually reports what you already told about the main difference between dpkg and Gdebi, i still do not understand why the procedure of actionparsnip worked unlike my procedure. Actually, the above link talks about the difference between dpkg and apt: dpkg does not install dependencies while apt does. Gdebi acts like Apt: it does install dependencies too.

So, again, my question is still alive. I am more and more convinced that my procedure should have been working just as actionparsnip's procedure or even better...

Any clue?
Thanks,
regards.

Hi,

nope, sorry I don't have a clue, that is why I posted those links about dpkg & apt as I don't really have an explanation for you!.
