install non debian files

I go to download off google chrome and it when starts and finish i open it and it has the files that are part of the download but i can't actually open it. Sometimes it says can't open or error and then gives option to cancel. Please can someone figure this out!!!

I want to install programs from the web and they say not a debian package not installable.

Hi,

what packages are you trying to install?, you should only normally install "deb" packages in Ubuntu based systems, see this thread for an explanation:
